Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 6, 2015
God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low.
— Baruch 5:7THE PASTOR’S MESSAGE
My dear friends,
This coming Tuesday, December 8th, we celebrate our feast day of the Immaculate Conception. This year is particularly significant because on that day Pope Francis will officially open the Jubilee Year of Mercy. We will try as much as
possible to publish meditations on the Year of Mercy in the bulletin. Pope Francis has said: “I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all, and God forgives always. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year- long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God.”
We will begin our celebration of the Year of Mercy with our annual celebration of the Immaculate Conception. The Mass schedule may be found on page 3 of the bulletin. After these celebrations of our patroness, we want to kick off our Year of Mercy well by offering an Advent Penitential Service with individual confession on Tuesday, December 15 at 7:30pm in our church.
Since this is a Jubilee Year and the Pope has opened the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica, he has instructed that all the world’s cathedrals open their holy doors as well. In our addition to our Cathedral, the Archbishop has designated five churches with Holy Doors: St Mary, Star of the Sea in Key West, La Ermita de la Caridad, Gesu, St. Anthony, and Our Lady of Mercy. We are trying to arrange a parish pilgrimage to the cathedral so that we may walk through our Archdiocesan Holy Door. Speaking of pilgrimages, this would be a good time to invite all of you who wish to walk through the Holy Door in Rome to join me next summer on a Pilgrimage of Mercy through Barcelona, Lourdes, Assisi and Rome. Details may be found on the last page of this bulletin. I pray all of you have blessed Year of Mercy and that you may reap the spiritual benefits of this Jubilee Year.
God bless you all,

ANGEL TREE
Because of the success of the Angel Tree, Immaculate will hold this project again this year. This will give us all the opportunity to share Christ’s love by helping to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the families in need. Participating in the AngelTree program is a powerful way for our church community to lovingly answer the biblical call to minister to the least of these.
Please take an angel home and bring a NEW and unwrapped toy, between now and December 14th to the Church or the Rectory Office. Please be generous, and let us give a chance for a child to hear the message that Jesus loves them.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
By now, trees are beginning to appear in living rooms throughout the parish. To a complete outsider to our culture, it must seem an odd thing indeed. The “roots” of this custom are in liturgical drama: religious plays performed in the churches and town squares of medieval Europe. The favorite theme for this time of year was the “Paradise Play,”a dramatic history of the human race from the Garden of Eden to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.
The language and music varied from place to place, but one feature was always in place: a great tree decorated with apples. As a prop, it provided lots of material for the actors: the temptation, shelter for the manger, and a reminder of the wood of the cross. Soon people began to bring “paradise trees”
into their homes, decorating them with gifts and lighted candles.
Many Germans give credit to Martin Luther for transforming the “Paradise Tree” into the evergreen Christmas tree. Walking home on a starry Advent night, he was so awed by the beauty of the night that he hauled a pine tree inside and decorated it with lighted candles. Americans were holdouts. It took until 1856 for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to decriminalize Christmas decorations, the old Puritan dislikes falling before the waves of Irish and German immigrants with traditions firmly in hand!
