When I was 20 years old and in seminary, I had the opportunity to go to the

1993 Denver World Youth Day. It was a tremendous event expecting to be

with all sorts of young people and with Pope John Paul II. I remember vividly

his homily on that Sunday in August in which he said the line: “Don’t be ashamed

of the gospel.” I remember even more vividly the correction he made to that line later on in the celebration

of the Mass. He paused and said, “I have a correction. I said ‘Don’t be ashamed of the gospel.’ Rather, be

proud of the gospel!” Instead of coming at the gospel from the negative, the Holy Father changed the

whole focus by emphasizing the positive: Be proud of the gospel!

This memory of mine dovetails nicely with the action of Jesus in the gospel. Depending on one’s

perspec-tive it could be interpreted as posiperspec-tive or negaperspec-tive. Negaperspec-tive, if one sees the temple and the religious

estab-lishment as the end of Jewish religiosity. Positive, if one sees that Jesus is doing something new, different,

open to something beyond this world.

“Zeal for your house will consume me.” What is our perspective? What drives us as Catholic Christians?

Are we passionate about our faith life; are we—dare I say—zealous in living it out?

We are covenanted to God the same way that the chosen people were covenanted through the giving of the

Law, which we were privileged to hear about in the first reading from Exodus.

A disciple once asked his teacher, “Rabbi, why are there so many no’s and you shall not’s in the

command-ments?” The master responded to his young apprentice, “There are not a lot of no’s. There is only one no:

Don’t go back to Egypt!” If we consider where the giving of the Instruction (Law—Torah) occurs in the

text, it happens after they have emerged from the slavery and oppression of Egypt. God through Moses is

saying: “Don’t go back to how you were before. Live as a new people, liberated from oppression and

slav-ery and zealously bound to a new covenant through which, oddly enough, you are truly free.”

In the great Sinai experience then, God establishes for this people how they are to be different, proud,

zeal-ous from those around them. These things—difference, pride, zeal—are not bad if oriented to the proper

end, which is worship and love of God and love of neighbor. They are what drive our passion for being

Catholic instead of being something different. That’s the basic question, isn’t it: Why be Catholic when

you can be anything else?

Paul says, in the second reading, that what “we proclaim [is] Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews

and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jew and Greek alike, Christ the power of God and

the wisdom of God.” Why be Catholic when it can seem such a stumbling block and such foolishness in

the eyes of others? Do we let ourselves be governed by others or is there some deeper truth, a more radical

zeal that compels us?

Jesus needed no one to testify to him about human nature. He himself understood it well. He also knew the

more abiding truth that compelled him to take the whip to the money changers and their hypocrisy. He was

different from the rest; he was zealous for God; he was proud of the Good News. Are we?

Reflexión Magnánima de Padre John Robert Skeldon

Cuando tenía 20 años y estaba en el seminario, tuve la oportunidad

de asistir al Día Mundial de la Juventud en 1993. Era un gran evento

que prometía mucho, estar con más jóvenes y con el Papa Juan Pablo II. Recuerdo

viva-mente su sermón ese domingo de agosto en el cual dijo: “No se avergüencen del

evange-lio.” Lo que recuerdo mas vivamente fue la corrección que haría mas tarde en la

celebra-ción de la Misa. Hubo una pausa y dijo: “Tengo una correccelebra-ción que hacer. He dicho, ‘No

se avergüencen del evangelio.’ Mejor dicho, ¡enorgullézcanse en el evangelio!” En vez

de llegar al evangelio por la vía negativa, el santo padre cambió todo el enfoque

enfati-zando lo positivo: ¡enorgullézcanse del evangelio!

Este recuerdo se acomoda muy bien con lo que hace Jesús en el evangelio. Depende

de la perspectiva que uno tome, la acción de Jesús se puede leer positiva o negativamente.

Negativa, si uno ve el templo y la institución religiosa como el fin de toda religiosidad de

los judíos. Positiva, si uno ve que Jesús esta haciendo algo nuevo, diferente, abierto a

algo mas allá de este mundo.

“El celo de tu casa me devora.” ¿Que es nuestra perspectiva? ¿Que nos impulsa como

católicos? ¿Somos apasionados por nuestra vida de fe? ¿Somos—me atrevo a decir—

celosos en vivir nuestra fe?

Somos parte de la alianza de Dios del mismo modo que el pueblo elegido entró en la

alianza a través de los Diez Mandamientos, de los cuales tenemos el privilegio de

escu-char en la primera lectura del Éxodo.

Un discípulo le preguntaba a su maestro, “Rabí, ¿porque hay muchos no en los

manda-mientos? El maestro le respondió al joven aprendiz, “Solo hay un no. ¡No regreses a

Egipto!” Si vemos donde ocurre el texto de la Ley, el Tora, vemos que ocurre después

que han emergido de la esclavitud y la opresión de Egipto. Dios, a través de Moisés, esta

diciendo: “No regresen donde vivían antes. Vivan como un nuevo pueblo, liberados de la

opresión y de la esclavitud y celosamente cásense (átense) a una nueva alianza, la cual

curiosamente los hará libres.”

En la gran experiencia del Sinaí, Dios estableció para su pueblo cómo iban a ser

diferen-tes, orgullosos y celosos por su Dios a diferencia de los demás de su alrededor. Esto—

diferentes, orgullosos y celosos—no es algo malo si esta orientado a un fin bueno, que es

el de adorar y amar a Dios y al prójimo. Es lo que impulsa nuestra pasión por ser

Católi-cos en vez de ser algo diferente. Esta es la gran interrogativa, ¿no? Pues ¿para qué ser

Católico cuando puedo ser algo diferente?

Pablo dice, en la segunda lectura, que nosotros “predicamos a Cristo crucificado, que es

un escándalo para los judíos y locura para los paganos; en cambio, para los llamados sean

judíos o paganos, Cristo es la fuerza y la sabiduría de Dios.” ¿Para qué ser católico

cuando parece ser un escándalo y locura a los ojos del mundo? ¿Nos dejamos llevar por

los demás o porque hay una verdad profunda, unos celos radicales que nos motivan?

Jesús no ocupaba que alguien le diera testimonio de la naturaleza humana. Él mismo la

entendía perfectamente. Él conocía esa verdad profunda que lo mueve a tomar el látigo

de cordeles para sacar a los cambistas del templo, junto con su hipocresía. Era diferente a

los demás; tenía celos de Dios; se enorgullecía de la Buena Nueva. ¿Lo estamos

noso-tros?

Couples for Christ invites all adults both Married and Single to the Christian Life Pro-gram (CLP). Parish/ Deanery Penance Service, Monday, March 23rd at 7p.m.. There

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within par-ish boundaries or be registered in the parpar-ish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be bap-tized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godpar-ents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need to use the nursery while attending this class. QUINCEAÑERA Guidelines

 The girl must be Baptized, have received her First Communion, first penance and be in religious education two years before the Quinceañera.

 She must attend the monthly sessions for 1 year of Sister Yolanda’s Young Ladies Vocational Group.

 Starting January 2016 there will be no new celebrations sched-uled individually.

 Parents must be currently registered in the parish, and contrib-uting to the support of the parish for a minimum of 12 months. Their contributions must be in the form of assigned envelope number or through some electronic transfer method, such as Faith Direct or automatic bank

 Starting January 2016, the Celebrations be will held on the 2nd

Saturday of the month at 11:00 AM. There will be a maximum of 5 individuals at any one ceremony. Families must register for one of the days that the ceremony will be held.

 There is a $350.00 fee for the use of our Church and will be payable two weeks before the celebration starting January 2016.

 The standard practice is that there Will NOT TO BE A MASS OR A COMMUNION SERVICE for Quinceañeras. Families are encouraged to have the blessing as part of the standard Sunday Liturgy. Any other request must be coordinat-ed with the Pastoral Associate or the Pastor.

 La joven debe estar Bautizada, recibido su Primera Comunión, Confesión y estar asistiendo al programa de Educación Religio-sa dos años antes de la Quinceañera.

 Debe asistir por 1 año a las sesiones mensuales de;para Jovenci-tas de la Hermana Yolanda

 Grupo Vocacional A partir de enero de 2016 NO se programa-ran celebraciones individuales.

 A partir de enero de 2016, las celebraciones se llevarán a cabo sólo el segundo sábado de cada mes a las 11:00 am. Habrá un máximo de 5 jovencitas en cada ceremonia. Las fami-lias deben inscribirse en uno de los días que se celebrará la ceremonia.

 Los padres deben estar actualmente registrados en la parro-quia, y apoyando a la parroquia con su contribución por un mínimo de 12 meses. Su contribución debe ser utilizando sus sobres a través de algún método de transferencia electrónica, o Faith Direct o giros bancarios automáticos

 Hay una cuota de $ 350.00 por el uso de nuestra Iglesia y se pagará dos semanas antes de la celebración a partir enero 2016.

No Discovery Class (Grades 7&8) this Wednesday, March 11. This

class resumes March 18th at 7p.m. in the Youth Room. Doors

open at 6:30. All are welcome.

No Paradox Cafe This Sunday. This class resumes next Sunday,

March 15th from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Youth Room

Come experience a relaxed atmosphere as we explore the

paradoxes and questions of our faith while we drink coffee, hot

choco-late, sodas and eat snacks. Please bring a snack and/or drinks to
