CONFIRMATION MEETING
There will be mandatory meetings for those who are in their second year of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Who should be at the meeting? The students of the Religious Education Program who will celebrate their Confirmation at the end of this school year and at least one of their parents/guardians. There are two options to attend. The same material will be presented at each bilingual meeting held in the gym and will last approximately 2 hours.
Option #1: Friday, Nov. 15 6:00-8:00pm Option #2: Saturday, Nov. 16 9:00-11:00am Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
God hears. God hears everyone – proud and humble, pushy and contrite. But God wants us to be as the latter in both sets – humble and contrite. Shooting off my mouth and lauding my own good deeds can get in the way of righteous action. We still want to be generous, honest, and fair. We should just let God do the noticing!
• How will I be less pushy and humble?
• How can my prayer be filled with “I love you, God, for _______?”
• How must my prayer say, “I am sorry for ________?”

Dios escucha Dios escucha a todos: orgullosos y humildes, agresivos y contritos. Pero Dios quiere que seamos los últimos en ambos conjuntos: humildes y contritos. Decir de mi boca y alabar mis propias buenas acciones puede obstaculizar la acción justa. Todavía queremos ser generosos, honestos y justos. ¡Deberíamos dejar que Dios se dé cuenta!

• ¿Cómo se puede llenar mi oración con "Te amo, Dios, por _______?"
• ¿Cómo debe decir mi oración: "Lo siento por ________?"

“I give you thanks that I am not like the rest of humanity”. LK 18:11
In the Franciscan theological tradition, we learn of the uniqueness of everyone and everything. Every one and everything has its own individual character and demonstrates a unique gift of God.
By appreciating the uniqueness of people and things we come to a deeper acknowledgement of the richness and the goodness of God.
In the Gospel story this week we hear the Pharisee give thanks to God that he is not like the rest of humankind. I don’t think the Pharisee wanted to appreciate the uniqueness of each person. He saw himself as different and better.
This teaching of Jesus can be directed at a basic human tendency that prefers to see difference rather than unity. When we think of people different than us, we categorize them, make assumptions about them, or judge them. It then becomes easy to see them as inferior. In the Gospel this week, the Pharisee made assumptions about the tax collector. He presumed that the tax collector was dishonest and not trustworthy. The Pharisee talked about his flawless conformity to the law. He was under the impression that his self perception of conformity with the law was all that mattered in his prayer to God. The tax collector had a different approach to prayer. He appealed to God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Jesus tells us that it is the tax collector that went home justified.
He is the humble one who will be exulted.
There are a couple of lessons in the Gospel story. The tax collector expressed his humility before God. He recognized the mercy of God. Pope Francis teaches that God shows his omnipotence in his acts of mercy (Misericordiae Vultus #6).God may not be so moved and impressed with our sacrifices and our donations. God listens to a contrite heart.
If we look at the social aspects of this Gospel story we see that the Pharisee puts himself at a distance from the tax collector and make himself distinct and better. I believe that this is a human tendency that that applies to all of us. We easily fall into categorizing people, making stereotypes, and rash judgments.
Sometimes we take this a step further. We see, experience, and read about the effects of racism and prejudice. These things are a far cry from the Franciscan assertion of the uniqueness and goodness of all people and things.
I find it personally satisfying when I try to reach out to people who may be different than me. Inevitably I find out there is minimal difference and more in common. Some of our basic values like, faith, family, and community are shared widely. It has also been my experience that some of our most cherished values are lived out in different and unique ways among the vast
majority of people. I think that we can learn from others who may be different from us. The more we strive to do this, the more we have a greater experience of the Kingdom of God.

Trigésima Semana en el Tiempo Ordinario

En la tradición teológica franciscana, aprendemos la singularidad de todos y de todo. Todos y cada uno tienen su propio carácter individual y demuestran un don único de Dios. Al apreciar la sin- gularidad de las personas y las cosas, llegamos a un reconoci- miento más profundo de la riqueza y la bondad de Dios.
En la historia del Evangelio de esta semana, escuchamos al fari- seo dar gracias a Dios porque no es como el resto de la humani- dad. No creo que el fariseo queria apreciar la singularidad de cada persona. Se veía a sí mismo como diferente y mejor.
Esta enseñanza de Jesús puede dirigirse a una tendencia humana básica que prefiere ver la diferencia en lugar de la unidad. Cuando pensamos en personas diferentes a nosotros, las categorizamos, hacemos suposiciones sobre ellas o las juzgamos. Entonces se vuelve fácil verlos como inferiores. En el Evangelio de esta sema- na, el fariseo hizo suposiciones sobre el recaudador de impuestos.
Presumió que el recaudador de impuestos era deshonesto y no confiable. El fariseo habló sobre su perfecta conformidad con la ley. Tenía la impresión de que su auto percepción de conformidad con la ley era lo único que importaba en su oración a Dios. El recaudador de impuestos tenía un enfoque diferente a la oración.
Apeló a la misericordia y al perdón de Dios. Jesús nos dice que es el recaudador de impuestos que se fue a su casa justificado. Él es el humilde que será exaltado.
Hay un par de lecciones en la historia del Evangelio. El recauda- dor de impuestos expresó su humildad ante Dios. Reconoció la misericordia de Dios. El Papa Francisco enseña que Dios muestra su omnipotencia en sus actos de misericordia (Misericordiae Vul- tus # 6). Dios puede no sentirse tan conmovido e impresionado con nuestros sacrificios y nuestras donaciones. Dios escucha a un corazón contrito.
Si observamos los aspectos sociales de esta historia del Evange- lio, vemos que el fariseo se pone a una distancia del recaudador de impuestos y se hace distinto y mejor. Creo que esta es una ten- dencia humana que se aplica a todos nosotros. Fácilmente caemos en categorizar personas, hacer estereotipos y juicios precipitados.
A veces llevamos esto un paso más allá. Vemos, experimentamos y leemos sobre los efectos del racismo y los prejuicios. Estas co- sas están muy lejos de la afirmación franciscana de la singulari- dad y la bondad de todas las personas y cosas.
Lo encuentro personalmente satisfactorio cuando trato de comuni- carme con personas que pueden ser diferentes a mí. Inevitable- mente descubro que hay una mínima diferencia y más en común.
Algunos de nuestros valores básicos como fe, familia y comuni- dad se comparten ampliamente. También ha sido mi experiencia que algunos de nuestros valores más preciados se viven de mane- ras diferentes y únicas entre la gran mayoría de las personas. Creo que podemos aprender de otros que pueden ser diferentes a noso- tros. Cuanto más nos esforzamos por hacer esto, más experiencia tenemos del Reino de Dios.
