Nativity of Saint John the Baptist June 24, 2018
“Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten
the sandals of his feet.” —Acts 13:25 JOHN THE BAPTIST
Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming.
Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed.

The Nativity of John the Baptist Page 4
WHAT THEN WILL THIS CHILD BE?This weekend we celebrate the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist is an important figure as we contemplate our Faith in Jesus Christ. St. John the Baptist foretold and prepared the way for his cousin Jesus. John was only 6 months older than Jesus and began his own mission by proclaiming, "Prepare the way of the Lord ". John preached repentance and baptized many who wanted forgiveness of their sins. In our Gospel today when asked about the name of this child, Elizabeth stated: "He will be called John". Zechariah, his father, was then asked to see if he will name him after his name according to the tradition and he wrote on a tablet, "John is his name." People were amazed because human tradition was not followed but God`s will. At times we need to listen more to God and follow God`s way rather than traditions that may have existed for ages. John was truly a blessing and his parents knew this.
God works in many and mysterious ways so we take time to listen to God; we may be directed in ways we never thought could happen. New Beginnings are often difficult but this was John`s message, turn from the past and live in the new light.
As we celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist, may we see how the "light" that John prepared us shines brightly in Jesus Christ. Jesus` light can shine brightly through us, inviting us to see new things happening, and inviting others to "New Beginnings" in the love of Jesus Christ. May we always carry that light into our lives, into our families, into our community and the whole world!
Giggle: It is a hot day and there is a traveling salesman passing through a small town in Texas when
he sees a little old man sitting in a rocking chair on the porch of a house. So he stops and says to the little old man, "You look as if you don`t have a care in the world! What is your formula for a long and happy life?" And the little old man says: "Well, I smoke six packs of cigarettes a day. I drink a quart of bourbon every four hours and six cases of beer a week. I never wash, and I go out every night. I don`t get to bed until four in the morning." And the salesman says, "Wow, that`s just great. How old are you?" And the little man says:
"Twenty-two."
Reminder : As you know, John Sheehan, a parishioner at St Teresa of Avila, has been called to the Order of deacons and is scheduled to be ordained on June 30, 2018 at 10:00 am, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. This will be a ticket-only mass, due to space limitations. Please keep John and his family in your prayers. We will celebrate his ordination on Sunday July 1, 2018 after all the masses!!!

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
