SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 9, 2018
THIS WEEK IN THE LITURGY, WE CELEBRATE:
***St. Damasus (December 11th), was born c. 305 in Rome, while the Church was still being persecuted by the Emperor Diocletian. As a child, Damasus loved to hear stories about the courage of the martyrs. In the year 315, the Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Toleration which granted religious freedom to Christians. When Da- masus became pope, he helped Christians adapt to this new, more peaceful age. He build several of Rome’s most famous churches, and at his request, the pagan altar in the Roman Senate was removed. He was devoted to the preservation of the catacombs where many martyrs were buried. He was the first to call Rome “the Apostolic See,”
and he declared Latin as the official language of the West- ern Church. He ordered his secretary, St. Jerome, to pro- vide a new, clear Latin translation of the Bible (called the Vulgate, from the Latin vulgare, meaning the language of people). He reigned as Pope for 24 years.
***St. Lucy (December 13th) was a martyr of the 4th century. Her name means “light” and her feastday, coming midway through Advent, guides our hope toward the com- ing of Christ our Light. She was a young woman of Syra- cuse on the Island of Sicily. According legend, she was engaged by her family to marry a pagan. However when she told him she wanted to devote her life to the service of the poor, he reported her to the police who then arrested, tortured and killed her. Lucy is the patron of Sicily and also of the city of Venice where the gondoliers sing the famous song, Santa Lucia, I her honor, as they guide their boats though the city’s canals. Lucy is also honored in the north- ern countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark), where at this time of year, the nights are long and old. Lucy is the light- bearer, remembered with the crowning of a young woman with a crown of candles called “Lucy flowers.” These girls lead parades of children who carry freshly-brewed coffee and sweet saffron breads baked in swirls called “Lucy cats.”
As the girls serve breakfast, the story of St. Lucy is retold, and a beautiful hymn is sung. “Soon shall another morning dawn, an everlasting day, when Christ the Lord in glory comes, to chase the night away.” In Hungary, children plant seeds in small pots on this day. By Christmas, the wheat has sprouted and they can carry its green shoots to church to the manger of the Christ child. The wheat is a powerful sign of the promise of spring. It is “living straw.”
St. Lucy is the patroness of those afflicted with diseases of the eye.
***St. John of the Cross (December 14th) was born in 1542 in Castile, Spain. His father died when he was very young and his mother was quite poor. At age 20, John be- came a Carmelite friar. He desired to live by the original rule of the Order which was quite strict (most Carmelites of his day lived by a relaxed version of the rule). St. Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite who had received permission to begin convents with a simple lifestyle like the one John had chosen for himself. Teresa asked John to become the spir- itual director of nuns of Avila, where she lived.

***San Dámaso (11 de diciembre), nació c. 305 en Roma, mientras la Iglesia seguía siendo perseguida por el Empera- dor Diocleciano. Como niño, a Dámaso le encantaba escu- char historias sobre el valor de los mártires. En el año 315, el emperador Constantino emitió el Edicto de Tolerancia que otorgó libertad religiosa a los cristianos. Cuando Dámaso se convirtió en Papa, ayudó a los cristianos a adaptarse a esta nueva y más pacífica era. Construyó varias de las iglesias más famosas de Roma y, a su pedido, se retiró el altar pa- gano en el Senado romano. Era una joven de Siracusa en la isla de Sicilia. Según la leyenda, su familia la comprometió a casarse con un pagano. Sin embargo, cuando ella le dijo que quería dedicar su vida al servicio de los pobres, él la denunció a la policía, quien la arrestó, torturó y asesinó.
Lucía es la patrona de Sicilia y también de la ciudad de Ve- necia, donde los gondoleros cantan la famosa canción San- ta Lucia, que es su honor, mientras guían sus barcos a través de los canales de la ciudad. Para Navidad, el trigo ha brotado y pueden llevar sus brotes verdes a la iglesia y al pesebre del niño Jesús. El trigo es un poderoso signo de la promesa de la primavera. Es "paja viviente". Santa Lucía es la patrona de quienes padecen enfermedades de los ojos.
***San Juan de la Cruz (14 de diciembre) nació en 1542 en Castilla, España. Su padre murió cuando él era muy joven y su madre era bastante pobre. A los 20 años, Juan se convirtió en un fraile carmelita. Deseaba vivir según la regla original de la Orden, que era bastante estricta (la mayoría de los carmelitas de su época vivían de una versión relajada de la regla). Santa Teresa de Ávila era una carmel- ita que había recibido permiso para comenzar conventos con un estilo de vida simple como el que Juan había elegido para sí mismo. Teresa le pidió a Juan que se convirtiera en el director espiritual de las monjas de Ávila, donde ella vivía.

Despite John’s gentle nature, he had made some powerful enemies within the Carmelite Order. They thought him rebellious and so had him imprisoned in Toledo, Spain. In his small, hot and filthy cell, John had to stand on a stools in order to read his prayer books by the light of the slit of a window high on the wall. However, during the nine months he was held prisoner, he wrote some of the great- est spiritual poetry in the history of Christendom, including, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night of the soul, The Spiritual Canticle and o Flame of Living Love. John wrote, “Where there is no love, it is for you to bring love.”
He thought of prayer as a tool to help us become more loving toward others and God. He is knows as the
“Mystical Doctor.”

Dios desea guiarnos con Su misericordia y jus- ticia. Estas dos son esenciales en el reino de Dios y al- gunos de los regalos que traerá la llegada de Cristo. El sistema egoísta de este mundo no tiene énfasis en estos valores. Los valores diarios de esta sociedad incluyen ob- tener beneficios más grandes, reducir el tamaño de las compañías para reducir costos, usar a los demás como beneficios personales o corporativos, y ponerle importancia a las instituciones sobre las personas son algunos de los
"valores" que nos rodean día tras día. Nuestro llamado es enderecer el camino a Cristo. ¿Cómo respondemos este llamado si vivimos en una sociedad que valora lo opuesto?
Debemos aprender a discernir lo que tiene un valor verdadero y confiar que Dios nos ilumine el camino para extender Sus valores a los demás.

Making straight the path of Christ is not only the vocation of John the Baptist but of every baptized believer. God desires to lead us with His mercy and justice. These are essentials in God's kingdom and some of the gifts Christ's future com- ing will bring. But our world's systems do not place empha- sis on these values. Wanting greater profits, downsizing companies in order to reduce expenses, using others for personal or corporate gain, and valuing institutions over people are just a few of the "values" we encounter every day. We are called to straighten the path to Christ. In a world that places value on things that are counter to our call, how do we respond? We need to learn to discern what is of real value and then take the risk of bringing it into the marketplace.
