“Peter proceeded to speak and said; ‘You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of

Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did… they put him to death hanging him on a tree. This man God raised up on the third day and granted that he be visible not to all but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance who ate and drank

with after he rose from the dead.’” We can listen to many Easter sermons, telling of the events and

appearances of Jesus. We visit the upper room with the apostles, meet Him with Mary in the garden, breakfast with Him on the shore of Tiberias, and share an evening meal in Emmaus. All are witness stories. The Pentecost sermon of Peter summarizes the event of Easter and its meaning for the witnesses. He was anointed with the Holy Spirit so we too have been confirmed. He was filled with power, so too we who live the life of grace. He went about doing good, the work of the church and we missionary disciples today. We too are the chosen witnesses of the Risen One who eat at His table, breaking the bread of life. Easter faith tells us that He lives and among us. Easter joy fills us with a special enthusiasm. Easter commissioning sends us to bring that joy to others.

“Entonces Pedro, tomando la palabra, dijo: ‘Ustedes ya saben qué ha ocurrido en toda Judea, comenzando por Galilea, después del bautismo que predicaba Juan: cómo Dios ungió a Jesús de Nazaret con el Espíritu Santo, llenándolo de poder. El pasó haciendo el bien y curando a todos los que habían caído en poder del demonio, porque Dios estaba con él. Nosotros somos testigos de todo lo que hizo… Y ellos lo mataron, colgándolo de

un patíbulo. Pero Dios lo resucitó al tercer día y le concedió que se manifestara, no a todo el pueblo, sino a testigos elegidos de antemano por Dios: a nosotros, que comimos y bebimos con él, después de su resurrección.’”Podemos escuchar muchos sermones del Día de Pascua, que nos cuentan de los eventos y

apariciones de Jesús. Visitamos el cuarto de arriba con los apóstoles, lo encontramos a El con María en el jardín, desayunamos con El en la playa de Tiberias, y compartimos una cena en Emaús. Todas son historias de testigos. El sermón de Pentecostés de San Pedro sumariza el evento de la Pascua y su significado para los testigos. El fue ungido con el Espíritu Santo para que nosotros también seamos confirmados. Se le llenó de poder, igual que los que vivimos una vida de gracia. Hizo el bien, el trabajo de la iglesia al igual que nosotros, los discípulos misioneros hoy. Nosotros también somos los testigos escogidos del Resucitado quienes comemos a Su mesa, compartiendo el pan de vida. La Pascua nos dice que El vive entre nosotros. La Pascua nos llena de un entusiasmo especial. La Pascua nos comisiona a llevar esa alegría a otros.

Che cos’è che fa correre l’apostolo Giovanni al sepolcro? Egli ha vissuto per intero il dramma della Pasqua, essendo molto vicino al suo maestro. Ci sembra perciò inammissibile un’affermazione del genere: “Non avevano infatti ancora compreso la Scrittura”. Eppure era proprio così: non meravigliamoci allora di constatare l’ignoranza

attuale, per molti versi simile. Il mondo di Dio, i progetti di Dio sono così diversi che ancor oggi succede che anche chi è più vicino a Dio non capisca e si stupisca degli avvenimenti. “Vide e credette”. Bastava un sepolcro vuoto perché tutto si risolvesse? Credo che non fu così facile. Anche nel momento delle sofferenze più dure, Giovanni rimane vicino al suo maestro. La ragione non comprende, ma l’amore aiuta il cuore ad aprirsi e a vedere. È l’intuizione dell’amore che permette a Giovanni di vedere e di credere prima di tutti gli altri. La gioia di Pasqua matura solo sul terreno di un amore fedele. Un’amicizia che niente e nessuno potrebbe spezzare. È possibile? Io credo che la vita ci abbia insegnato che soltanto Dio può procurarci ciò. È la testimonianza che ci danno tutti i gulag dell’Europa dell’Est e che riecheggia nella gioia pasquale alla fine del nostro millennio.
