In the reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be
“doers” of the Gospel, not just listeners. Being a “steward” of God’s Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor.
Fr. Duc’s Message of the Week August 29, 2021
Dear Parishioners,
There was a talented artist who was painting the Last Supper. He wanted to make the painting as real and lively as possible. So, he took great pain to find the right models for the picture. The first to be painted was Jesus. Looking hard and long in difference places, the artist found a man with a face of transcendent loveliness and purity. He spent days and days to bring out the face of Jesus from the model. Then another model for Peter. Then another for James. It took him years to finish. The last one was Judas.
To find the right face, the painter went out and searched in the darkest dens of iniquity. He visited brothels, addicts’ hangouts, and robbers’ hideouts.
Finally, he found a man in prison with sentences worthy of many executions. His face was so depraved and vicious that the painter was taken aback at first. And he had to carry the painting into the prison. Time seemed to stand still as he tried to draw the devil incarnate.
When the painting was finally done, the model stared at it for a long time.
Then, slowly, lines of tears rolled down on his cheeks. The artist was astonished, thinking that the painting must be so real and lively as to make the man cry. The man turned to him and said, “You painted me before.” “I don’t think so. You must be mistaken. I had never seen you before.” The man pointed at the face of Jesus saying, “This was my face a few years before.”
Only a few years could turn a person of beauty and purity into one of ugliness and depravity. How can that be?
The answer to that terrible question comes from today’s readings. Both the first and second readings tell us that God and his word are within us, closer to us than we are to ourselves. In the same line, the Bible also says that the human heart is the temple of the Holy Spirit. We have heard quite often about the fact that God is present within us. What we often forget, what we have a lot of problem with is the fact that beside God there is someone else in the human heart. When we ignore that person, when we don’t pay attention to him, disasters are just around the corner, horrific mistakes are on the verge.
Jesus said, “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy,
blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”
Simply put, in the same human heart reside both God and the devil. Who we are depends on according to whose voice we act. Only a few years could turn a pure and holy person into the devil incarnate simply because that person had been acting not according to the voice of God within him but rather in conformity with the devil’s whisper, day after day.
Inside the human heart is the source of light and holiness, the fountain of joy and wisdom, the bedrock of courage and trust. But also inside the human heart is the black hole of darkness and sin, the cause of pain and suffering, the shackle of depression and despair.
Within the human heart lie both life and death. Which one do we choose? What kind of person do we want to become? What voice do we listen to? How can we tell the voice of the Holy Spirit from the sweet murmur of the devil?

Queridos Feligreses,
Había un artista muy talentoso que estaba pintando la Ultima Cena. Quería hacer la pintura lo mas real y viva posible. Entonces, se tomo la difícil tarea de buscar los modelos exactos para la pintura. El primero que pinto fue a Jesús. Buscando muy bien y por mucho tiempo en muchos lugares, el artista encontró a un hombre con cara de amor y pureza que trascendía.
Estuvo días y días para poder sacar la cara de Jesús del modelo. Y luego otro modelo para Pedro.
Otro para Santiago. Le tomo años terminarla. El último fue Judas.
Para encontrar la cara correcta, el pintor salió y busco en las guaridas más obscuras de la iniquidad.
Buco en los burdeles, reuniones de adictos, escondites de ladrones, finalmente encontró a un hombre en prisión con sentencias dignas a muchas ejecuciones. Su cara parecía muy cruel y depravada que el pintor fue tomado por sorpresa al principio.
Entonces tuvo que llevar la pintura a la prisión. El tiempo parecía que se detenía mientras trataba de dibujar la cara del mismo demonio encarnado.
Cuando la pintura estaba terminada finalmente el modelo se le quedo mirando por mucho tiempo.
Entonces, muy lentamente lagrimas rodaron por sus mejillas. El artista estaba sorprendido, pensando que la pintura era tan real y viva como para hacer llorar al hombre. El hombre se volvió a él y le dijo,
“Tu me dibujaste antes.” “No, no creo. Estas en un error. Nunca te había visto antes.” El hombre señalo la cara de Jesús diciendo, “Esta era mi cara hace algunos unos años.”
Solo bastan unos anos para convertir a una persona hermosa y pura en una horrible y depravada. Cómo fue posible?
La respuesta a esta terrible pregunta viene de las lecturas de hoy. La primera y la segunda lectura nos dicen que Dios y su palabra están con nosotros, tan cerca de nosotros más que a nosotros mismos. En el mismo tema, la Biblia dice que el corazón humano es el templo del Espíritu Santo. Hemos escuchado muy seguido acerca de que en verdad
Dios está presente entre nosotros. Lo que olvidamos a menudo, en lo que verdaderamente tenemos un gran problema es que en realidad aparte de Dios hay alguien más en el corazón humano. Cuando
ignoramos esa persona, cuando no le ponemos atención, los desastres están a la vuelta de la esquina, horribles errores están al borde.
Jesús dijo, “Dentro de las personas, desde sus corazones, salen los pensamientos malignos, robo, adulterio, asesinato, avaricia, malicia, envidia, blasfemia, arrogancia, engaño, libertinaje y locura.
Todos estos males provienen de dentro y contaminan.
Ponerlo simplemente, en el mismo corazón humano a los dos Dios y el mal. Quienes somos dependerá de la voz que actuemos. Solo unos años pueden convertir a una persona santa y pura en el mismo demonio encarnado simplemente porque la persona no a actuado de acuerdo a la voz de Dios en el pero en alianza en vez con el susurro del diablo, día tras día.
Dentro del corazón humano está la fuente de luz y santidad, la fuente de gozo y sabiduría, la fundación
de la fuerza y la confianza. Pero también dentro del corazón humano está un agujero negro de tinieblas y
pecado, la causa de dolor y
sufrimiento, las amarras de la depresión y desesperación.
Dentro del corazón humano están las dos, vida y muerte. Cual escogeremos? Qué clase de persona queremos ser? A cual voz escuchamos? Como podemos distinguir la voz del Espíritu Santo del dulce murmullo del demonio?

The MHT Food Pantry is giving free food to more than 300 households every distribution day and brings groceries to more than 100 homeless families every week.

The food pantry, located on the side of the parish office, is open FIRST and THIRD Wednesdays of every month from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM where people in need can receive free groceries.

Trong bài đọc trích từ thư Thánh Giacôbê, chúng ta được thúc giục trở thành những người “thực hành” Tin Mừng chứ không chỉ là người nghe mà thôi. Trở thành “người quản lý” Lời Chúa là biết lắng nghe Tin mừng, đón nhận Tin mừng và biến Tin mừng thành hành động trong cuộc sống hàng ngày của chúng ta. Và khi chúng ta không chắc chắn về những quyết định hoặc cách hành xử như những người quản lý Tin Mừng tốt lành, Thánh Gia-cô-bê nhắc nhở chúng ta: Chúng ta không bao giờ sai lầm khi chúng ta chống lại những giá trị không phù hợp với Tin Mừng, và giúp đỡ những người đang gặp khó khăn, đau khổ và nghèo túng.

LÁ THƯ HẰNG TUẦN CỦA CHA XỨ— 15/8/2021
Ông Bà Anh Chị Em quý mến,
Có một họa sĩ tài năng muốn vẽ bức tranh Bữa Tiệc Ly. Ông ta muốn sao cho bức tranh mang nét chân thật và sống động nhất. Vì vậy, ông ta đã không quản ngại mệt nhọc để tìm ra những người mẫu phù hợp cho bức tranh. Người đầu tiên được vẽ là Chúa Giêsu. Quan sát chăm chú và thật lâu ở những nơi khác nhau, ông ta tìm thấy một người đàn ông có khuôn mặt khả ái và thuần khiết siêu việt. Ông đã dành ra rất nhiều ngày để đưa ra khuôn mặt của Chúa Giêsu từ người mẫu. Sau đó, một khuôn mẫu khác cho Phêrô. Sau đó, một người nữa cho Giacôbê. Ông ta mất nhiều năm để hoàn thành. Người cuối cùng là Giuđa.
Để tìm ra khuôn mặt phù hợp, người họa sĩ đã đi lang thang tìm kiếm trong những ngõ ngách tối tăm đầy tội ác. Ông ta đến thăm các nhà thổ, hang ổ của những kẻ nghiện ngập, và nơi ẩn náu của những tên cướp. Cuối cùng, ông đã tìm thấy một người đàn ông trong tù với bản án đáng xử tử nhiều lần. Khuôn mặt của anh ta tiều tụy và hằn học khiến người họa sĩ thoạt đầu phải sửng sốt. Và ông phải vác bức tranh vào nhà tù để vẽ Giuđa.
Thời gian như ngừng trôi khi ông cố gắng vẽ một kẻ tưởng như quỷ hóa thân.
Cuối cùng khi bức tranh được hoàn thành, người mẫu Giuđa đã nhìn chằm chằm vào nó một lúc lâu. Rồi từ từ, những dòng nước mắt của hắn ta lăn dài trên má. Người họa sĩ vô cùng kinh ngạc, nghĩ rằng bức tranh phải thật và sống động đến mức khiến người tử tù phải khóc. Hắn ta quay sang ông họa sĩ và nói, “Anh đã vẽ tôi trước đây.” “Tôi không nghĩ vậy. Bạn nhầm rồi. Tôi chưa bao giờ nhìn thấy bạn trước đây.” Người đàn ông chỉ vào mặt Chúa Giêsu nói: “Đây chính là khuôn mặt của tôi vài năm trước.”
Chỉ một vài năm có thể biến một người đẹp đẽ và thuần khiết trở thành một kẻ xấu xí và sa đọa. Làm thế nào điều đó có thể xảy ra?
Câu trả lời cho câu hỏi kinh hoàng đó đến từ các bài đọc ngày hôm nay. Cả bài đọc I và II đều cho chúng ta biết rằng Thiên Chúa và lời của Người ở trong chúng ta, gần chúng ta hơn chúng ta gần gũi chính mình. Cùng một câu, Kinh Thánh cũng nói rằng trái tim con người là đền thờ của Chúa Thánh Thần. Chúng ta đã nghe thường xuyên về chân lý Thiên Chúa hiện
diện trong chúng ta. Những gì chúng ta hay quên, những gì chúng ta thờ ơ là: bên cạnh Thiên Chúa còn có một ai khác trong trái tim mình. Khi chúng ta phớt lờ người đó, khi chúng ta không chú ý đến hắn, thảm họa đang cận kề, những sai lầm khủng khiếp đang sắp diễn ra.
Chúa Giêsu nói: “Vì từ bên trong, từ lòng người, phát xuất những ý định xấu: tà dâm, trộm cắp, giết người, ngoại tình, tham lam, độc ác, xảo trá, trác táng, ganh tỵ, phỉ báng, kiêu ngạo, ngông cuồng. Tất cả những điều xấu xa đó, đều từ bên trong xuất ra, và làm cho con người ra ô uế.”
Nói một cách đơn giản, trong cùng một trái tim con người, có cả Thượng Đế và ma quỷ. Chúng ta là ai phụ thuộc vào tiếng nói mà chúng ta lắng nghe và làm theo. Chỉ một vài năm có thể biến một người thuần khiết và thánh thiện trở thành hiện thân của ác quỷ, đơn giản chỉ vì người đó đã hành động không theo tiếng nói của Thiên Chúa bên trong anh ta mà là tuân theo lời thì thầm của ma quỷ hết ngày này qua ngày khác.
Bên trong trái tim con người là nguồn ánh sáng và sự thánh thiện, suối nguồn của niềm vui và khôn ngoan, nền tảng của lòng dũng cảm và sự tin tưởng. Nhưng bên trong trái tim con người cũng là hố đen của bóng tối và tội lỗi, là nguyên nhân của đau đớn và khổ sở, gông cùm của trầm cảm và tuyệt vọng.
Trong trái tim con người ẩn tàng cả sự sống và cái chết. Chúng ta chọn điều gì? Chúng ta muốn trở thành con người như thế nào? Chúng ta lắng nghe giọng nói nào? Làm thế nào chúng ta có thể phân biệt tiếng nói của Thần Khí với lời ngọt ngào của ma quỷ?

THÁNH GRÊGÔRIÔ CẢ (540-604 ): Lễ kính, 3/9 - Giáo Hoàng, Tiến Sĩ Hội Thánh
Thánh Grêgôriô Cả là trưởng thánh bộ Rôma trước khi 30 tuổi. Năm năm sau đó, ngài từ chức, sáng lập sáu đan viện trên các phần đất của ngài ở Sicilia và ngài là một tu sĩ dòng Biển Ðức (Benedictine) ở Rôma. Vào lúc 50 tuổi, ngài được chọn làm giáo hoàng thứ 64. Ngài thẳng tính và kiên quyết, nổi tiếng vì những cải cách phụng vụ, và củng cố sự tôn trọng học thuyết.
Ngài cách chức các linh mục bất xứng, cấm không được lấy tiền khi phục vụ, và ngài lấy tất cả quỹ riêng của đức giáo hoàng để săn sóc những người Do Thái bị bách hại và các nạn nhân của nạn dịch tễ cũng như nạn đói kém.
Một sử gia Anh Giáo đã viết: “Không thể nào tưởng tượng được những gì sẽ xảy ra trong thời Trung Cổ–thật lộn xộn, vô trật tự–nếu không có triều đại giáo hoàng của thời trung cổ và vị cha chung đích thực là Ðức Grêgôriô Cả.“
Cuốn sách của ngài “Cách Chăm Sóc Mục Vụ” nói về nhiệm vụ và đặc tính của một giám mục, đã được đọc trong bao thế kỷ sau khi ngài chết. Ngài diễn tả vị giám mục chính yếu như một y sĩ mà nhiệm vụ chính là rao giảng và duy trì kỷ luật. Trong các bài giảng thực tế của ngài, Thánh Grêgôriô có tài áp dụng phúc âm hàng ngày vào nhu cầu đời sống của giáo dân. Ðược gọi là
“Cả”, Thánh Grêgôriô được nâng lên một vị trí ngang hàng với Thánh Augustine, Thánh Ambrôsiô và Thánh Giêrôme như một trong bốn vị tiến sĩ nòng cốt của Giáo Hội Tây Phương.
Thánh Grêgôriô thích là một đan sĩ, nhưng ngài sẵn sàng phục vụ Giáo Hội trong các phương cách khác khi được yêu cầu. Ngài đã hy sinh những sở thích của ngài, nhất là khi làm Giám Mục Rôma (Giáo Hoàng). Một khi được kêu gọi để phục vụ công ích, Thánh Grêgôriô đã dùng hết khả năng để chu toàn nhiệm vụ.
“Nói cho cùng, có lẽ không khó để người ta từ bỏ của cải, nhưng chắc chắn là thật khó để từ bỏ chính mình. Khước từ những gì mình có là chuyện nhỏ, nhưng khước từ cái tôi của mình, đó mới thật đáng kể.”.
