Jesus speaks in bold, broad strokes in the gospel today;

he overdraws to make a point. Seemingly harsh words, like “let the dead bury their dead,” contradict his usual command about love and caring. He exaggerates to make a point– like cutting off a hand or an eye. He makes the point that no one or no thing can occupy that place in the heart that belongs to God alone; no one or no thing can be in the center of our life but Christ. Putting God first becomes a relationship with God that leads to wisdom of life– to see all those other things and people, possessions, life itself in the proper perspective. When God is placed first in my life, no one else loses, I become a better husband, wife, parent, friend, priest.

Religious fundamentalists can be dangerous: Muslim, Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish. They believe that everyone else is wrong and probably going to hell– a breeding ground for contempt. Samaritans and Jews had centuries of hatred separating them stemming from Exile in 6th century BC, over five hundred years before. Some Jews in the area of Samaria had remained in the land and did not go into exile in Babylonia, but they intermarried with non Jews. When the other Jews returned, they looked down on these Samaritans as social and religious half breeds and traitors, culticly unclean, a bastard race. They refused to let these “unclean” Samaritans help rebuild the Jerusalem temple. So the Samaritans built their own temple further north in Gerazim. Jews later destroyed that temple, under John Hyracanus, a Maccabean Jewish ruler, during his reign (134-104 BC)–

although the Samaritans continued to worship there. The Samaritan form of Judaism continued to develop separated from Jerusalem Judaism, with different interpretations of scripture, the meaning of the Messiah, etc. By the time Jesus was born they had been hating each other for 500 years… in the name of God– like some Arabs and some Jews today in the Middle East! “Let us call down fire from heaven,” the apostles suggest. Jesus rebukes them, meaning that if you want to follow him you have to think and speak differently Jesus affects everything about us– how we think and act, from past prejudices, from pettiness – “let call down fire from heaven.” When we follow Jesus fully, it affects family life and business life, how I spend my money, how I express myself sexually, what I do and not do, say and not say.

Do we refuse Jesus? We do not say “NO”

usually, but we have excuses. I will… IF… or BUT… E.g.

We saw excuses in the Old Testament and Gospel readings: excuses.

I would forgive, but he doesn’t deserve forgiveness. I wouldn’t be angry, if he weren’t a jerk. I wouldn’t be unfaithful, if she or he were more understanding. I wouldn’t be prejudiced, if they didn’t act that way. I wouldn’t gossip, but others need to know. “I’m coming…”

kids yell to their mother… but it means maybe later on. Friend may say it to friend… but it means maybe not right away…everyone has excuses. Jesus wants no excuses for what is the most central thing in our life, our focus on him as the one whom we follow.

A FAITHFUL RESPONSE

Yours in Christ,

Midnight Musings

¿Rechazamos a Jesús? Normalmente no decimos “NO”, pero tenemos excusas. Lo haré... SI... o PERO... P. ej.

Respect Life Intercessions for Life

For the preservation of religious freedom in our country: That the right to freely worship God

and live according to His commands may be protected and upheld;

We pray to the Lord: Lord hear our prayer.

"The faithful’s offerings to the Holy Father through the Peter’s Pence Collection are destined to

Church needs, to humanitarian initiatives and social promotion

projects, as well as to the support of the Holy See.”

T

he Peter’s Pence Collection has a long tradition as a sign that Catholics around the world are joined in support of the Holy Father.

A Concrete Sign of Mercy

The year 2020 united the whole world in suffering as the COVID-19 pandemic took millions of lives and cre- ated widespread economic hardship due to the closure of nonessential businesses. In Lebanon, the hardship of the pandemic was compounded by a catastrophic explosion of a warehouse at the port in Beirut on August 4, 2020.

The blast killed more than 200 people and injured and displaced thousands more.

With funds collected through the Peter’s Pence Collection, the Holy Father provided an immediate response of €250,000 to the Church in Lebanon, which made medical care, temporary shelter, and other basic needs available to victims through the efforts of Caritas Lebanon, Caritas Internationalis, and sister organizations of Caritas. Donations to the Peter’s Pence Collection support not only the activities of the Roman Curia that assist the pope in the exercise of his ministry but also

solidarity projects that help those most in need, such as emergency relief to the people of Lebanon.

For more information on Peter’s Pence, please visit the Vatican’s Peter’s Pence website:

www.obolodisanpietro.va/en.html.

A Tradition of Support for the Holy Father Support for such papal efforts is rooted in the scriptural message to take care of the poor and expresses unity with the Holy Father in two ways: through the ongoing activi- ties of the Holy See and through the charitable works of the Holy Father on behalf of those most in need.

St Louis continues to learn and reflect about how to live as Good News People!

If you are hungry for deeper conversations about God and faith, and want to form meaningful friendships while learning about how to get involved in justice work, this Summer Justfaith Ministries program is for you!

We will explore two main questions: 1. What tools does our faith have to offer regarding huge questions around poverty and injustice? & 2. Considering poverty and other forms of human suffering, what is the Good News of the Gospel?

Would you be interested in joining us?

We will be facilitating the second 8-session program of the JustFaith Catholic series, which is called Faith and Poverty: A Solidarity Response. We will pray together in a virtual group of 6 to 10 people, read books and watch videos, and have conversations around how we can seek justice in our community.

For existing groups or ministries: We will give you access to the resources for you to facilitate them at your convenience.
