A HUMBLE KING
Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God!
UN REY HUMILDE
Como el centro tonal en música, la nota que sigue retor- nando en las lecturas de hoy es la humildad. Esperamos con gozosa expectativa la venida de nuestro Señor como Rey.
Pero se nos dice que esperemos y nos regocijemos en este manso y humilde rey, montado en un burrito. No en el caba- llo o el carruaje de los grandes y poderosos, sino en una hu- milde bestia que carga al Rey cuyo dominio se extiende
“desde el gran río hasta los últimos rincones de la tie- rra” (Zacarías 9:10). Este Rey viene a desterrar las armas del guerrero y a traer la paz. ¡No es de extrañar que un mun- do abatido se regocije y dé gracias a Dios!

Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons
The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons.
This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues- day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church)

“My yoke is easy and my burden light.”
Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel comes after a discourse in which Jesus reproach- es people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. In this context, today’s Gos- pel explains the reason for this unbelief and re- veals what is necessary for faith. Today’s Gospel also continues to enhance our understanding of discipleship as last week’s Gospel did.
Jesus first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself known to Jesus’ disciples.
He praises God who has made himself known to the “little ones” and not to the wise and learned.
As in other recent readings from Matthew’s Gos- pel, a contrast is made here between the unbe- lieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.
The second part of this reading calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us.
In the concluding sentences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. This common theme of Matthew’s Gospel probably reflects tension that existed between Jesus and the Pharisees and be- tween the Pharisees and the community of Chris- tians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Juda- ism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful ob- servance of the Mosaic law taught by the Phari- sees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holi- ness is presented as uncomplicated and even rest- ful. -Loyola Press

aint of the Week Benedict480 - 547 Feast July 11
Benedict was born in Norcia, a small town near Spoleto (Umbria, Italy) into a distinguished family and studied at Rome. Early in life he was drawn to monasti- cism, "giving over his books, and forsaking his father's house and wealth, with a mind only to serve God, At first he became a hermit, leaving a depressing world—pagan armies on the march, the Church torn by schism, people suffering from war, morality at a low ebb. He soon real- ized that he could not live a hidden life in a small town any better than in a large city, so he withdrew to a cave high in the mountains for three years. Some monks chose Benedict as their leader for a while, but found his strict- ness not to their taste. Still the shift from hermit to com- munity life had begun for him. He had an idea of gather- ing various families of monks into one “Grand Monas- tery” to give them the benefit of unity, fraternity, and per- manent worship in one house. Finally he began to build what was to become one of the most famous monasteries in the world—Monte Cassino, commanding three narrow valleys running toward the mountains north of Naples.
The Rule that gradually developed prescribed a life of liturgical prayer, study, manual labor, and living together in community under a common abbot. Benedictine asceti- cism is known for its moderation, and Benedictine charity has always shown concern for the people in the surround- ing countryside. In the course of the Middle Ages, all mo- nasticism in the West was gradually brought under the Rule of St. Benedict. Today the Benedictine
family is represented by two branches:
the Benedictine Federation encom- passing the men and women of the Order of St. Benedict, and the Cistercians, men and women of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. St. Benedict died March 21 547 at Monte Cassino, Italy and he was canonized in 1220.
