Come and pray with us

Estimados feligreses:

Padre Dennis Venegas

Dear Parishioners:

We celebrate this Sunday the fourth Sunday in a regular theme. The main topic is: Jesus saves. The Gospel (Mark 1: 21-28) presents a man inhabited by an evil spirit. Imagine how this man would have felt after this tragic event in which Jesus cast off evil spirits and freed him from this terrible situation. How thankful he will be! We do not suffer possession by an evil spirit, but we all have our pains and temptations, they are often hidden, and seem to have a

mysterious power over us, just as Satan had power over this man - until Jesus came. Perhaps while this possessed man was listening to Jesus in the synagogue, he felt the agitation of the evil spirit. Perhaps he felt that the Devil felt threatened. Suddenly, Satan exercises his usual strength, seizing the man's body and senses to attack Christ. The man is thrown to the ground in a final dash of evil fury, then silence. His eyes meet the eyes of Christ. What gratitude that fills his heart as he sees the love and joy emanating from the face of his Savior! Jesus Christ came to bring new life and new hope to every human heart, and he rejoices whenever we allow him to get what he wants for us.

Unlike other religious beliefs, Christianity does not offer wealth, success, pleasure, and popularity in this life. Jesus said that following Him includes carrying our cross every day - suffering comes with a Christian's name. Christianity offers a true, personal, and lasting

friendship with God through Jesus Christ. This friendship includes forgiveness of sins, wisdom and peace of the heart amidst life's struggles, and the hope of heaven. It makes life's secrets make sense by helping us see them as God does.

Jesus Christ who saves is not a hero from the past, like Socrates or Julius Caesar. Whenever we need to allow the power of His grace to fortify our weary and vulnerable souls, we can do so here. Jesus is present in confession through the ministry of his priest. Whenever we need cleansing, forgiveness, and healing with His grace, we can find him there, the same Jesus who drove out demons and astonished the crowd. Jesus is also found in the Bible, and it is the only book in the world directly inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus is present among us in this liturgy, because he promised that wherever two or three gathered in his name, he would be there. We have Christ himself present in all of these ways, all the time.

Today, let us place our hopes for happiness, meaning and fruitfulness in his sincere grace, not in our efforts alone. May we open all our hearts to Jesus' healing strength and saving power! Fr. Dennis Venegas

Saint Blaise unknown – 316(February 3)

Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise." Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles. In 316, the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, Agricola, arrested then-bishop Blaise for being a Christian. On their way to the jail, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet. Blaise cured the child, and though Agricola was amazed, he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. Therefore, Agricola beat Blaise with a stick and tore at his flesh with iron combs before beheading him.
