The Fifth Week of Lent brings us ever closer to the celebration of Easter and for our Elect (those preparing to enter the Christian community at the Easter Vigil) ever closer to the waters of baptism where they will share in the Paschal Mystery, joining in the death and resurrection by which they will experience forgiveness of sin and the freedom it brings as God’s children and members of God’s Church. At the waters of the font they will be incorporated into the Body of Christ and live in a glorious new hope,
empowering them to bring God’s redeeming love to all, particularly the poor, by sharing in the mission of evangelization as disciples of Jesus the Christ. For those already baptized, that action which immersed us into the inexhaustible source of life which is the death of Jesus we recall that event by which we entered into communion with God and with our brothers and sisters. As we join with the Elect for their third and final scrutiny we also join them in discerning the call of God in our lives to become part of the evangelizing mission of our discipleship. As part of this discernment we all, baptized and Elect, need to reflect on our being called children of God and recognizing God as our heavenly father. This is why in this final week of discernment the Elect are entrusted with the Christian Prayer; formed by divine teaching and given to his disciples by
Jesus because of their request to instruct them in how to pray when they asked him to teach them how to pray; the Our Father. For when his disciples came to him and asked him how they should pray he told them to pray to God as a very intimate, loving father using an Aramaic word which would best be translated ‘daddy’. A daddy who knows everything that we need and will give us everything that is good and necessary. A daddy who loves his children with every ounce of his being and wishes to insure that his children never go without.
This is the Father who we as Christians are called to enter into relationship with, a God who, although the God of all the world, has called a group of people as a nation of priest, prophets, and kings, to bring his love to all of the world. This special relationship not making us better than others but entrusting us with a greater responsibility to others. It was thus that Jesus taught his disciples to pray to an Abba of all the world acknowledging this special relationship but also the special responsibility.
If we look at the Gospel of Matthew (6:9-13) or Luke (11:2-4) we see this special relationship as we pray to Abba (God) whose name is holy, that we may become part of the kingdom of holiness established from the beginning of creation; a relationship in which we trust in the goodness of our heavenly Father to give us all that we need in this moment of our life so that we can live without worry or anxiety; and ask for the forgiveness of our offenses because as children of a loving God we have forgiven those who have offended us.
It is into this loving family (not just Sacred Heart, one Family but the world as one family of God) into which the Elect are initiated in baptized and in which the baptized, particularly in the Lenten/Easter season, remember that we live. In this Fifth Week of Lent, at the Third Scrutiny, the Elect will receive the Our Father, the Christian Prayer, and be entrusted with reflecting upon the call to be God’s children. As we stand as witnesses to this, particularly those who will be at the scrutiny Mass, let us all reflect upon the wonderful gift given in our baptism, to be called Children of God, but more importantly the great responsibility that comes with that call, to be God’s missionaries to the world. Loving as God loves let us go forth into the world bringing the life-giving word of God in all that we do and say.
May God, the Abba, prepare our Elect and renew in those already baptized, the grace that makes us brothers and sisters, true children of God and living members of his body, the Church.
God’s peace and blessings for a fruitful final weeks of Lent and a fulfilling Paschal celebration.
Dcn. Ed
