TRUE PROPHETS

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of au-thority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Else-where, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scrip-ture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God's very words filling our mouths.

PROFETAS VERDADEROS

Hoy en Deuteronomio oímos que las palabras de Dios llenarán la boca de un profeta verdadero, pero un profeta falso pondrá, por así decirlo, palabras meramente hu-manas en boca de Dios. En el Evangelio según san Mar-cos, vemos a Jesús enseñando y curando como un profeta verdadero con la autoridad de la voz de Dios. La historia de nuestra Iglesia está llena de ambos tipos de profetas. Algunos profetas falsos fueron extremadamente popula-res y eran muy versados en la Sagrada Escritura, incluso ocupaban puestos de autoridad eclesial. Pero en el Evan-gelio de hoy descubrimos que la fama de Jesús se ex-tendió porque enseñaba con autoridad; no era una autori-dad porque fuera popular o famoso. En otra parte, descu-brimos con él, cuando es tentado y enfrenta a Satanás en el desierto, que cualquiera puede citar la Sagrada Escritu-ra, incluso si estos van en contra de los propósitos de Dios. Hoy oímos que su autoridad no era como la de los escribas, que eran la autoridad oficial religiosa en su época. Nuestra tarea es hacer todo lo posible por saber identificar a los verdaderos profetas que están entre no-sotros y también a ser verdaderos profetas. El salmista nos dice cómo hacerlo: no debemos endurecer nuestros corazones cuando escuchamos a Dios. Si realmente escu-chamos a Dios, Dios pondrá sus palabras en nuestra bo-ca.
