This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. This celebration began way back in 1935 when the Church wanted to highlight the importance of proclaiming Jesus who is the Eternal Word of God, who reveals to us “all that he had heard and seen in the presence of the Father” (Jn 8:38). Jesus who is the Eternal Word “spoke” to us about God, through the things he said and also the things he did. Jesus is the Word made flesh and He expected us to allow his words to become flesh in us, so that we could be filled with the Holy Spirit that breathes in them. They are the Word of the Father. Living the words of Jesus and sharing our experiences of living them with each other, creates communion among us and forms us into a Christian com- munity that conforms us to Christ. When we tell our experiences of the Word in us we give Christ in us to each other.
In 1935, the Church also invited us to grow in an understanding of our faith, and it wished to honor those people who teach us the faith by “telling” it and letting it “resound” in the ears and hearts of others. The Greek word “catechesis”
means “resound.” People who tell about the faith to others are called “catechists.”
Parents, for example, are the first catechists of their children. They tell them the first stories about God and his love for us. The different ministries in our parish also catechize, making the faith of the Church “resound” in the hearts of the peo- ple they serve. CCE teachers share the faith with our young people, teaching them what the Catholic Church believes about God and his love for the world.
Jesus sends all of us, just as he sent those first disciples with the mandate:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do all that I told you” (Mt 28:19-20). Jesus told us what he saw in the presence of the Father, in other words, his relationship with the Father. Jesus sends us out each day as cate- chists who teach what he told us: that our relationships should be Christian rela- tionships, relationships of mutual love.
This year’s title for catechetical Sunday is “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ.” It invites us to step up as witnesses for Jesus and all that he “told” us. And what is the way that Jesus would like us to “witness” to him? He said it quite clear- ly: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one anoth- er” (Jn 13:35).
This is the Word that Jesus would like to resound from us both individu- ally and as a community. It resounds, for example, when we gather with the stu- dents and teachers of the CCE to share our simple experiences of trying to love as God loves, with the help of the Cube of Love. We give witness to Jesus through the ministries in our parish that visit the sick, gather people to pray, promote de- votion and imitation of the Virgin of Guadalupe among families, visit the prison- ers, take food to the hungry, find clothes for the needy, hold garage sales in sup- port of the charitable works in neighborhoods.
We also give authentic witness to Jesus when these different ministries in the parish love one another; indeed, this is the primary witness that Jesus would have us give. He knows that when we love one another, also when our ministries love one another, Jesus himself is among us as the real Catechist who gives witness to himself. His presence among us is like the amplifier that makes his Word resound in each of us as we try to live out his words in our daily lives. As we “teach” the faith to our children and young people, study God’s Word in our Bible Study and classes, let’s remember that the first lesson Jesus wants us to learn from him is what he knew in the presence of the Father.

Este fin de semana celebramos el Domingo Catequético. Esta cele- bración comenzó en 1935 cuando la iglesia quiso resaltar la importancia de proclamar a Jesús que es la palabra eterna de Dios, quien nos revela
“Yo digo lo que he visto junto a mi Padre” (Jn 8:38). Jesús, la palabra eterna, “nos habló” acerca de Dios a través de las cosas que él dijo e hizo. Jesús es la palabra hecha carne y él cuenta con que nosotros pongamos sus palabras en práctica hasta que se encarnaren en nosotros, para que podamos llenarnos del Espíritu Santo que respira en ellos. Es la palabra del padre. Vivir las palabras de Jesús y encontrar el momento para compartir nuestras experiencias de palabra vivida el uno con el ot- ro, crea la comunión entre nosotros y nos forma en una comunidad cristiana que nos conforma a Cristo. Cuando contamos nuestras experiencias de la palabra en nosotros damos a Cristo en nosotros el uno al otro.
En 1935, la iglesia también nos invitó a crecer en una comprensión de nuestra fe, y deseaba honrar a aquellas personas que nos enseñan la fe “diciéndola”
y dejando que “resuene” en los oídos y corazones de los demás. La palabra griega
“catequesis” significa “resonar”. Los que hablan de la fe a otros se llaman
“catequistas”. Los padres, por ejemplo, son los primeros catequistas de sus hijos.
Ellos les cuentan las primeras historias acerca de Dios y su amor por nosotros. Los diferentes ministerios de nuestra parroquia también catequizan, haciendo que la fe de la iglesia “resuene” en los corazones de las personas a las que sirven. Los maes- tros de nuestro programa de educación en fe comparten la fe con nuestros jóvenes, enseñándoles lo que la iglesia católica cree acerca de Dios y su amor por el mundo.
Jesús nos envía a todos, así como envió a esos primeros discípulos con el mandato: “Vayan, pues, y hagan que todos los pueblos sean mis discípulos. Bau- tícenlos en el Nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, y enséñenles a cumplir todo lo que yo les he encomendado a ustedes” (Mt 28:19-20). Jesús nos dijo lo que vio en la presencia del padre, o sea su relación con el padre. Nos envía cada día como catequistas para enseñar lo que él nos dijo: que nuestro relacionar- nos debe ser cristiano, es decir, de ese amor mutuo.
El título de este año para el Domingo Catequético es “Reclutar Testigos de Jesucristo”. Nos invita a intensificar esfuerzos de ser testigos de Jesús y todo lo que él nos “dijo”. ¿Y cuál es la manera que Jesús quiere que nosotros seamos
“testigos” de él? Lo dijo con toda claridad: “En esto todos reconocerán que ustedes son mis discípulos: en el amor que se tengan los unos a los otros” (Jn 13:35).
Esta es la palabra que a Jesús le gustaría ver resonar de nosotros tanto individualmente como comunidad. Esta palabra (Jn 13:35) resuena, por ejemplo, cuando nos reunimos con los estudiantes y maestros de la catequesis para compar- tir nuestras sencillas experiencias de cómo tratamos de amar como Dios ama, con la ayuda del cubo del amor. Tambien testimoniamos a Jesús a través de los minis- terios de nuestra parroquia que visitan a los enfermos, reúnen a la gente para orar, promueven la devoción y la imitación de la Virgen de Guadalupe entre las familias, visitan a los prisioneros, llevan comida a los hambrientos, encuentran ropa para los necesitados, tienen venta de garaje en apoyo a las obras benéficas en vecindarios.
También damos testimonio auténtico de Jesús cuando estos diferentes ministerios en la parroquia se aman los unos a los otros; de hecho, este es el princi- pal testimonio que Jesús nos haría dar. Él sabe que cuando nos amamos los unos a los otros, también cuando nuestros ministerios se aman los unos a los otros, Jesús mismo está entre nosotros como el verdadero catequista que da testimonio de sí mismo. Su presencia entre nosotros es como el amplificador que hace que su pala- bra resuene en cada uno de nosotros mientras tratamos de vivir sus palabras en nuestra vida diaria. A medida que “enseñamos” la fe a nuestros niños y jóvenes, estudiamos la palabra de Dios durante nuestro estudio bíblico y las clases que asisti- mos, recordemos que la primera lección que Jesús quiere que aprendamos de Él es lo que Él sabía mientras en la presencia del Padre.
