2 –January 5, 2020—Epiphany of the Lord
Happy New Year everyone!
During the announcements at the Christmas night Mass, I made a corny reference to the coming year (it got a “boo” from D. Jeff and the acolyte). Referring to the way vision is measured, I said “The New Year twenty-twenty, will be a great one for seeing things better.”
Yes, clunky humor but not a bad point. The beginning of another time period is helpful for us to see things in a new light, in a new way. The past becomes clearer and we can work to make steps forward.
Today the church celebrates Epiphany Sunday. The star led the Three Kings to Jesus because it piqued their interest and set them into motion to figure out what this might mean. The guiding light brought a new way to see the world, gave the Magi better vision.
Our better vision, with the Holy Spirit can help us make good and healthy choices with the life that God has given us. We may wish things were different or that we
lived in a different situation. And yet God is with us right were we are at. We all have treasures to offer to the Child Jesus. This week our prayer is that you, Holy Spirit help me offer my treasures for Jesus.
Even if that treasure is a goofy joke that made folks groan, everything can be offered to Christ in this New Year.

Durante los anuncios en la misa de la noche de Navidad, hice una referencia cursi al año entrante (recibió un "abucheo" de D. Jeff y el
acólito). Refiriéndome a la forma en que se mide la visión, yo dije: "El año nuevo veinte y veinte será genial para ver las cosas mejor". Sí, un humor tonto, pero en realidad no es un mal punto. El comienzo de otro período de tiempo nos ayuda a ver las cosas en una nueva luz, de una nueva manera. El pasado se vuelve más claro y podemos trabajar para dar pasos hacia adelante.
Hoy la iglesia celebra el domingo de Epifanía. La estrella llevó a los Reyes Magos a Jesús porque les despertó su interés y los puso en camino para descubrir lo que esto podría significar. La luz que los guió trajo una nueva forma de ver el mundo, le dio a los Reyes Magos una mejor visión.
Nuestra mejor visión, con el Espíritu Santo, puede ayudarnos a tomar decisiones buenas y saludables con la vida que Dios nos ha dado. Podemos desear que las cosas fueran diferentes o que viviéramos en una situación diferente. Y, sin embargo, Dios está con nosotros precisamente allí donde no encontremos. Todos tenemos tesoros para ofrecer al Niño Jesús. Esta semana nuestra oración es, Espíritu Santo, ayúdame a ofrecer mis tesoros a Jesús. Incluso si ese tesoro es una broma tonta que hizo gemir a la gente, todo se puede ofrecer a Cristo en este Año Nuevo.

Gospel Reading Matthew 2:1-12 The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage.
Family Connection:
The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you?
Read today’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12. The gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—have come to be understood as symbols of Christ’s royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering and death. They are special be- cause in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be: our Savior. We pray that we will acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all that we do and say. Conclude by singing together “We Three Kings.”

IVING A STEWARDSHIP EUCHARISTIC ADORATIONBegin the New Year by visiting Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday, January 7, in Our Lady of Guadalupe side chapel from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. A new year is a time for new beginnings so take the opportunity of adoration to deepen your relationship with our Lord. In His Presence we can pour out our hearts for ourselves and for those dear to us. We do need someone present during the entire time of adoration so there is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule of the church if you are able to commit to an hour of prayer or you may call Mary, 473-6163, to schedule a time. In addition to the scheduled worshippers, everyone is invited to come and pray as your schedule allows.
Our adoration prayers include the intentions written in the Book of Intercessions so if you have a special need, please write it in the Book of Intercessions located near the statue of the Blessed Mother in the front of the church. We will pray for your intentions at adoration.
As we begin this New Year, we continue to ask the Holy Spirit to ignite His fire in each of us. A good way to do this is to spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament!

Salvation Army Bell Ringing
A big ‘thanks you’ to everyone who helped ring the bells for the Salvation Army Christmas
project. During the four hours we worked, we earned over $200. Almost everyone who entered Casey’s put something in the bucket. It was fun to chat with those who donated and everyone had a smile on their faces as they put some money in the bucket. Thanks again for helping
with this worthy Christmas event.
