A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
“God did not make death” the first reading declares. If not, why funerals?
Jesus Christ has a nature that is both divine and human. We hu- mans have a nature that is both temporal and eternal.
We are spirit and we are flesh.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is quoted as having said that we are not physical beings having a spiritual experience,” we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.
I went to the “visitation” of a friend who had died. A mutual friend of mine and the deceased said to me that the funeral experience always strengthened his belief in the eternal life of the soul. He said to me,
“Look, that corpse is not our friend. It only housed our friend for a time.” If that is true, then God did not make death as what is really, truly the person does not die.
St. Thomas Aquinas would like to give a warm welcome back to our Parochial Vicar, Father
Jaime Rivera!
Rivera!

4FAITH FORMATION 2021-2022
We are excited to open 2021-2022 Faith Formation registra- tion! We are preparing an array of programs for our families, children, and teens to grow in their faith and fall deeper in love with God. Please note the programs listed below are now open for registration. It is our hope to create opportunities for family engagement throughout the year. Please review our programs below, and if there are any questions, or if there is anything we can do to assist you, please do not hesi- tate to contact us.
Family Centered Programs
Family Forming Disciples - Like other parishes around us, we are adapting the Archdiocesan family program, Families Forming Disciples (FFD). FFD will serve as the primary faith formation program for children of all ages, but specifically directed toward families with children 4 to 12 years old. It will be available in English and in Spanish. Groups of families with children of similar ages will meet with catechists online and in person to encounter the Lord together and encourage one another.
Catechist of the Good Shepherd - In addition, we are pleased to bring back the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for Fami- lies. This program has been so popular that space is limited.
This program thrives on parental participation.
Youth Centered Programs
STA YDisciple - Open to all youth in 7th-9th grade. This pro- gram will foster a strong Catholic identity for 7th-9th graders and provide a Christ-centered community to support their growth in faith and fellowship to foster their relationship with Jesus. This two-year program enables our youth to best understand the sacrament of Confirmation. It will serve as foundation years for Confirmation preparation. After com- pletion, teens will transition to STA TEEN Ministry.

Marcos, ahora, nos lleva paso a paso, a ver los mila- gros de Jesús. En este caso son dos, el de la mujer que sufría de hemorragias, y la resurrección de la hija de Jairo, jefe de la sinagoga y responsable de la comuni- dad judía. Hoy, el Evangelio nos narra un doble acto de fe. Jesús se fue de camino a la casa de Jairo y de repente entre el gentío que lo apretujaba sucedió lo siguiente: “Se encontraba allí una mujer que padecía un derrame de sangre desde hacía doce años... la mu- jer pensaba: Si logro tocar, aunque solo sea su ropa, sanaré. Al momento cesó su hemorragia y sintió en su cuerpo que estaba sana” (Marcos 5:24-28). Ensegui- da viene el dialogo de preguntas y respuestas entre Jesús, sus discípulos y la mujer que responde asus- tada. A lo que Jesús le dice. “Hija, tu fe te ha salvado;

GOSPEL MEDITATION
June 27, 2021
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The author of The Cloud of Unknowing prays, “That which I am and the way that I am, with all my gifts of nature and grace, you have given to me, O Lord, and you are all this. I offer it all to you, prin- cipally to praise you and to help my fellow Christians and myself.”
Knowing that God sustains us in being is the key to faith. All that we need to do is to love God as God is and the rest will begin to fall into place. God made us in His image and desires that we have life. God also desires that we be healed of all of our wounds, especially those caused by sin, and know his loving touch. Being weighed down by negativity, imperfections, the cares of the world, and weakness is not something that God desires.
Faith can profoundly change how we see God, ourselves, and one another. It gives a clearer lens through which to see life and con- nects us with the powerful virtues of love and hope. Three friends journeying with us through all that we encounter, faith, hope, and love, help us experience God’s embrace and heal us. All we have to do is let God be who God is and not foolishly try to make Him into what we need or want Him to be. Without God we cease to be. It’s that simple. The very blood that flows through my veins and the life that I have come directly from Divine origins. With this knowledge of who God is and who I am, I can open my ears and hear the powerful words Jesus speaks, “Do not be afraid, just have faith.” Trust begins.
When we are struggling, we naturally reach out for God because we know that a divine remedy is the only remedy. But, in doing so we wrestle with letting God take charge. We want something more miraculous and visible than the obvious and have difficulty in find- ing consolation simply resting in God’s presence. Our naked being, stripped of any pretense or self-serving agenda, is being called to rest in and love the uncreated Presence of God. Reach out in love to God. Ask God to heal you from all that separates you from Him. Put aside any ideas of God that create barriers between you and God’s tender and endearing presence. The Cloud of Unknowing leaves us with wisdom, “think of yourself and of him in the same way, that is, with the simple awareness that he is as he is and that you are as you are.” This is a meeting of two friends who desire nothing more than to share life together.

E lie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, wrote dozens of books but may be best known for Night, an autobiographical account of his time as a teenager in the concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald.
The Nobel laureate committed his life to keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive.
As a Jew, Wiesel knew the power of keeping memory. He understood the rabbis who said,
“To remember is to give life; to forget is to let die.” He believed that by remembering the horrors of the Holocaust, humankind could never again repeat such an atrocity.
Determined not to allow those who perished in the Holocaust to die in vain, he became a voice for the voiceless and a human rights advocate. He confronted hatred, bigotry, and intolerance and defended human dignity. He spoke out against the massacres in Bosnia and Rwanda and the burning of black churches in the United States. He championed the rights of blacks in South Africa and political prisoners in Latin America. For Wiesel, keeping memory and taking action were two sides of the same coin.
The relationship between keeping memory and taking action unfolds in our midst in each celebration of the liturgy.
Memory is kept of the passion and death of Jesus, whose death atoned for our sins. And
memory is kept of God’s power in raising Jesus from the dead. As Eucharistic Prayer IV states:
Therefore, O Lord,
as we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption,
we remember Christ’s Death
and his descent to the realm of the dead, we proclaim his Resurrection
and his Ascension to your right hand, and, as we await his coming in glory, we offer you his Body and Blood, the sacrifice acceptable to you
which brings salvation to the whole world.
Keeping memory of the death and Resurrection of Jesus calls us to act. It urges us to offer ourselves in sacrificial love. It asks us to refuse to allow the death of Jesus to be in vain. So we too must become voices for the voiceless and advocates for human rights. We too must confront hatred, bigotry, intolerance, and defend human dignity.
At the entrance to the United Stated Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, are Wiesel’s words “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” May we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ, be mindful of his death and Resurrection and bear witness to peace and justice for the dead and the living.
Remember and Act
Keeping memory of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ calls the faithful to act in the world.
