Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time NO BAD NEWS
There are many time when we say, “Tell me what I want to hear, and don’t confuse me with facts.” And we don’t take kindly to someone who might be bold enough to snuff out our expectations.
The biggest problem with such an attitude is not that we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out on the new and surprising gifts others can give us. Like the townspeople in today’s Gospel story, we too of-ten refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be goodness for us.
Today’s readings call for hospitality and faith and dis-cernment. Hospitality open the doors of our hearts and minds to the “stranger” among us, no matter how famil-iar he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the gifts of others, no matter how alarming or “strange” they may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the prophets in our midst, no matter how amazing they may
seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernment —
culti-vate these. Then, nobody can bring bad news.

Hay muchas veces cuando decimos: “Dime lo que quiero escuchar, y no me confundas con datos”. Y no vemos con buenos ojos a alguien que podría ser lo sufi-cientemente audaz y acabe con nuestras expectativas.
El mayor problema con esa actitud no es que nos perdemos la verdad o los hechos, sino que nos perdemos los regalos nuevos y sorprendentes que otros nos pueden dar. Al igual que la gente del pueblo en el relato del Evangelio de hoy, nosotros también a menudo nos nega-mos a permitir que otros muestren los talentos que pue-den ser una buena noticia para nosotros.
Las lecturas de hoy piden hospitalidad, fe y discerni-miento. La hospitalidad abre las puertas de nuestro cora-zón y nuestras mentes a los “forasteros” entre nosotros, no importa lo familiar que él o ella puede parecer. La fe nos permite aceptar los dones de los demás, no importa cuán alarmante o “extraños” nos puedan parecer. El dis-cernimiento nos ayuda a descubrir a los profetas entre nosotros, no importa lo increíbles que puedan parecer. Hospitalidad, fe y discernimiento –cultívalos. Así, nadie podrá traerte malas noticias.

Refinishing of Pews & Replacement of Kneelers
All of the pews have been removed
so that they may be refinished. In the mean-time folding chairs will be used. When the pews are returned they will be fully restored with new kneelers attached! We will also be working on polishing the floors while the pews are being restored.

Tutor Volunteers Needed
The Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora will be train-ing new tutor volunteers for its literacy program in Au-gust. Female volunteers (with high school diploma) are trained to help women students learn to read, write,
and speak English.
Tutors meet with students once a week for 90 minutes, from Sept. to May, at 260 Vermont St., Aurora (behind St. Therese Church). Tutors do not need to speak Spanish or have teaching experience, but all volunteers must attend three evenings of training.
The training dates are August 17, 19, and 24, from

Help Needed - St Vincent de Paul Déjà vu thrift shop
Can you volunteer a few hours a week to help needy fami-lies in our area. The DejaVu thrift shop has helped hun-dreds of families with access to free and low cost clothing, furniture, housewares, etc. and profits have gone to SVdP conferences to help families with urgent needs for food, rent, utilities, medicine, transportation and other basic needs.
Our Sunday Sales program at the Déjà vu shop has urgent needs for more volunteers, as this program has been a huge success. The needs include volunteers to pick up donated furniture, clean and repair furniture [“deluxing”], deliver and set up furniture at the Geneva location on Sun-day morning, help customers with sales, and deliver
furni-ture to customers when requested.
The Déjà vu shop is also short of volunteers for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. There is flexibility to volunteer all day, mornings, or afternoons. Qualifications include learning simple cash register, ability to walk up and down stairs, sort donations, lift 10 pound bags and boxes, and
greet customers.
