So is the prodigal son dying and rising with Christ when he humbles himself to say he is sorry for his sins? Yes, and even if you can’t hear a sound, the angels and saints in heaven are rejoicing. Then the prodigal son rose up from the dead and walked back home to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him. He was filled with compassion. He ran out to meet him with his arms outstretched. He hugged him and kissed him. He welcomed him back as his son even before he had a chance to say he was sorry.
This is about God’s mercy for us sinners. This is God our Father welcoming us home with open arms. Didn’t God do this when He became human—when He became Jesus and died with His arms nailed and outstretched for us on the cross for us? Isn’t that how God showed us how much God really loves us? Isn’t that how God made it possible for us to return home? And it doesn’t matter if we are the worst of the worst, does it? It doesn’t matter if we’ve com-mitted all the sins in the world, does it? We just have to humble ourselves and truly repent.”
But the parable isn’t over. There is still another scene. It is a warning from Jesus. Do not become like the prodigal’s brother. The older brother was angry. He too was alienated from his father. Maybe for even longer. He had “slaved” for his father for years. He had never disobeyed his com-mands. But he never felt rewarded. His father never even gave him a goat so he could celebrate with his friends. Why was he wrong? He had nothing to be jealous about. All along, everything his father had was his. But his pride made him blind to see that his father loved him just as much as the prodigal son.
Why is this important to us? Because pride can take us away from God, while we keep thinking we are close to God. That is exactly what happened to the Pharisees and scribes. They were highly esteemed and praised by every-one for being righteous and loyal to Gods’ command-ments. But it turned their heads. That esteem and praise became the most important thing for them. They prayed and fasted in public, but inside they were empty. Their reli-gion became external ceremonies and observances. The will of God became subordinate to their will. The love of God and neighbor became subordinate to love of self. And they condemned sinners and anyone who did not follow their rules and traditions. Like the prodigal’s older brother, they had no compassion. They were angry that God had compassion for sinners who repent. They were jealous. What can we do so we won’t become like the Pharisees and the prodigal’s brother? The answer is: We have to be-come the prodigal’s father. How? This is the key: By the way we live our life, we make our Father present while we become like our Father. Let me repeat that: at the same time we make God present in everything we say and do, we are transformed to become like God.
If people only knew. If people only knew how much God really, really, loves us, they would come running home to God like the prodigal son. They just need to realize we are all searching like the prodigal son, to become the
prodigal’s father.
