“Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’”

The 3Hebrew concept, shalom.

Our Western understanding of

peace is different from the intention of Jesus and his missionary team.

In the West peace is typically defined as the absence of trouble or conflict. Shalom has a much deeper meaning. On a basic

level, shalom used in context can mean simply “hello” or “goodbye.”

But the concept also conveys the hope of a blessing from God that will result in a sense of wellness and wholeness upon the home and its occupants. It is a prayer that everyone and everything in the home be whole, complete, perfect, and full. Jesus reminds them that if their shalom is not received it can be taken back. Shalom is God’s vision for the emphatic goodness of all relationships. It is unrelated to any particular circumstance. Paul and his ministry partner Silas knew this kind of God-gifted peace in Acts when they were in prison after having been publicly flogged. Even then they were “praying and

singing hymns to God” as the other prisoners in the jail listened (Acts 16:22-25). Paul and Silas knew the true shalom of God. Keep this in mind the next time you visit a

friend. Wish them shalom with this intention of wholeness and

wellness in mind.

español paz traduce un concepto hebreo, shalom. Nuestra comprensión occidental de la paz es diferente de la intención de Jesús y su equipo

misionero. En el mundo occidental, la paz se define típicamente como la ausencia de problemas o

conflictos. ^Shalom tiene un significado mucho más profundo. En un nivel

básico, el uso de shalom en contexto puede significar simplemente «hola» o

«adiós». Pero el concepto también transmite la esperanza de una bendición de Dios que dará como resultado un sentido de bienestar y plenitud en el hogar y sus ocupantes.

Es una oración que pide que todo y todos en el hogar sean íntegros, completos y perfectos. Jesús les recuerda que, si su shalom no es

recibida, puede ser retirada. Shalom es la visión de Dios para la bondad

following words in your will: “I give, devise and bequeath to St. Peter &

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Haverstraw (write in the amount) to be used for the needs of the Church.”
