Por favor sigan orando por nuestros estudiantes. Necesitamos orar por nuestros vecinos.
In January 2018, Pope Francis gave a message on the occasion of the World Day for Migrants and Refugees. In the first part of this message he talks about the Bible’s teaching on welcoming the stranger and the foreigner. “You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:34). Throughout the first years of my pontificate, I have repeatedly expressed my particular concern for the lamentable situation of many migrants and refugees fleeing from war, persecution, natural disasters and poverty. This situation is undoubtedly a “sign of the times” which I have tried to interpret, with the help of the Holy Spirit, ever since my visit to Lampedusa on 8 July 2013. When I instituted the new Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, I wanted a particular section – under my personal direction for the time being – to express the Church’s concern for migrants, displaced people, refugees and victims of human trafficking. Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43). The Lord entrusts to the Church’s motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future. This solidarity must be concretely expressed at every stage of the migratory experience – from departure through journey to arrival and return. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will, who are called to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities.
PLEASE MAKE A WILL AND REMEMBER YOUR PARISH
Most of us own more than we realize. But no matter the size of an estate, if you want to provide for your surviving relatives and others, you need to have a will. If you die without making a will, you lose the ability to control the disposition of your assets. The law of the state will tell your family where your money and property go. Your bequest can be a specific amount of money, property or stock. Naming our Parish as a charitable beneficiary is simple; to make a gift, simply include the following words in your will: “I give, devise and bequeath to St. Peter & St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Haverstraw (write in the amount) to be used for the needs of the Church.”
CHURCH IN AFRICA
This week is the collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. The people of Africa are joyous and faith-filled, but they face challenges due to poverty, food shortages, disease, and migration. This collection is an opportunity to stand with our brothers and sisters in Africa and support pastoral projects that are so needed on this continent. Please be generous today. FR. JOSE CRUZ’S NEW ADDRESS
Fr. Jose Cruz’s new address is:
Our Lady Queen of
Martyrs Church

New York, N.Y. 10040
