WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

“What do you know?” is the question linking all three readings today. Imagine the shock waves that shot through the city of Jerusalem that first Easter morning. Jesus’ body was missing! By the time Pe-ter spoke the words found in today’s first reading, fifty days had passed, so he began by saying, in ef-fect, “I take it you know what has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of Nazareth.” Of course they knew by then, but in today’s Gospel we are tak-en back to the first day. We meet Mary Magdaltak-ene exclaiming, “We don’t know where they put him!” What do we know? In the second reading Paul asks, “Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough?” Do we know the power of our own faith? Do we know the effect we can have on others?

“Through the recommendation of the Pastoral Council, the weekday Mass will start at 8:00 a.m., beginning Easter Monday, April 21, 2014. This change was pro-posed by the school and daily mass parishioners, and approved by Fr. Dan Urcia.”

The Guadalupe Hope Society, a non profit charity founded by Catholics in Silicon Valley who have started a crisis pregnancy center on The Alameda are offering tickets for their banquet which is free admission but limited seating. Bishop Daly will give the opening and closing prayers. A flyer with the in-formation is on the corkboard in the vestibule.

Applications are being accepted for the 2014-15 school year. These may be secured on the school website at www.sjvsj.org. Financial aid information and due dates are also available. If you would like additional information or a tour of the school, please contact the school office at (408) 258-7677.

PLEASE NOTE: For the 2014-15 school year, a kindergarten child must be 5 years old by Septem-ber 1, 2014. Starting in 2014, the kindergarten schedule will be 8-2PM.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Lenten journey is now complete, its mission of renewal and preparation to receive new life fulfilled. The call to worship the Risen Lord has been received, and we gather to experience together the consoling presence of Christ in word and sacrament. We are at our best today, crowded and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the waters of baptism, we have acquired wonderful companions, and together we can accom-plish great things.

This is the day for rekindling the old flames of bap-tismal commitment, so we light the paschal candle, and by its light we make yet again the ancient promises to reject evil’s grip and empty promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but respond with one voice to

age old questions. New life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly baptized and the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fasting, and giving alms. At any Mass during the next fifty days, you may be surprised by grace and splashed by water!

ADA News

Thanks to all who have answered the request to par-ticipate in the 2014 ADA campaign. To date we have collected $128,436 from 468 families. Remember once all pledges have been paid in full the funds over goal come back 100% to the parish.

¿QUÉ LES PARECE?

“¿Qué les parece?” es la pregunta que une a las tres lecturas de hoy. Imagínense el choque que es-tremeció a Jerusalén esta primera mañana de Pas-cua. ¡El cuerpo de Jesús no estaba! Cuando Pedro pronunció las palabras de la primera lectura de hoy, habían pasado cincuenta días y por eso empezó diciendo: “Ustedes saben lo sucedido en toda Judea sobre Jesús de Nazaret . . .” Por supuesto sabían lo ocurrido, pero en el Evangelio de hoy nos transpor-tamos al primer día. Nos encontramos con María Magdalena exclamando: “¡No sabemos dónde lo han puesto!”

¿Qué sabemos nosotros? En la segunda lectura

Pablo pregunta: “¿No saben que basta un poco de levadura para transformar toda la masa?”

¿Conocemos el poder de nuestra propia fe? ¿Sabemos el efecto que tenemos en los demás?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Hace 3,000 años los chinos pintaban huevos de pato para celebrar la primavera. Los egipcios pinta-ban huevos en honor de la diosa Ishtar, mientras ingleses y alemanes lo hacían para celebrar al sol. Eventualmente la práctica continuó en honor de la resurrección de Cristo.

La costumbre de esconder huevos hervidos y pinta-dos ha tomado nueva vida entre los mexicoameri-canos. Cada Cuaresma mi mamá solía guardar los cascarones de los huevos que nos comíamos. Recuerdo con alegría la costumbre de colorear los cascarones el Sábado de Gloria para que la coneja nos los escondiera para la Pascua. Al día siguiente, después de Misa nos reuníamos a buscar casca-rones y romperlos sobre la cabeza de quien se arri-mara, para bañarlos con el confetti multicolor. La costumbre de celebrar la Pascua con casca-rones decorados es una bella tradición. Esta cos-tumbre muestra que todas las naciones pueden agregar a la Iglesia cristiana tradiciones propias de su cultura, ya que Jesucristo dio su vida por todas ellas. Es justo celebrar la Resurrección del autor de la vida con símbolos de fecundidad y todos los colores del gozo.

MISA DIARIA

Por recomendación del Concilio Pastoral, la Misa diaria cambiará de horario; será a las 8AM

comenzando este Lunes de Pascua, 21 de Abril del 2014. Este cambio fue propuesto por la escuela, por feligreses de la Misa diaria, y aprobado por el P. Daniel Urcia.

EDUCACION EN EL HOGAR

Están todos invitados a participar en una Conferen-cia Católica de Educación en el Hogar ( Homes-chooling). La conferencia se llevará acabo en la parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Paz en Santa Clara el fin de semana del 25 y 26 de abril. Habrá pláticas en español sobre como funciona la Educación en el hogar, y como tener una educación Homeschooling exitosa. Pueden encontrar mas información a la entrada de la iglesia. Gracias!
