On Sunday, October 10, 2021, present and former parishioners filled Our Lady of Victory Church for an outstanding celebration of a Mass of Thanksgiving for the countless graces and blessings received in that holy place over the decades. So many of the priests who had served at Our Lady of Victory joined me and our deacons in the sanctuary for the Mass. Many of the School Sisters Saint Francis, who had so ably staffed Our Lady of Victory School were also present. A former choir director returned from Ohio to lead the Our Lady of Victory choir, assisted by members from the choirs of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Pascal in providing sacred music worthy of so important of a liturgical event.. A well-attended simple supper followed the Mass, giving present and former parishioners of Our Lady of Victory a seemingly well appreciated opportunity for Christian fellowship and reacquaintance. I have already heard from several of the priests who attended. They were very grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many of you, who had graced their lives and ministries. The much anticipated showing of “Vade mecum”, the commemorative video project, masterfully engineered by Susan Zimny, a parishioner, graced the screen at the Copernicus Center. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to Susan Zimny, Joanne Lech, Deacon Bob Lech, Jackie Brennan, Mary Beth Frystak, Tony Lopez, Donna Quevado, Deacon Michael Ahern, Father Michael Wyrzykowsli and so many others behind the scenes. Thank you, all, for giving us the opportunity to give God the glory and thanks to Our Blessed Lady for the victory of faith, hope, and love at Our Lady of Victory who is also Our Lady of the Rosary! All three readings today support—each in its own way, of course—a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coordinate with the other two readings, today’s second reading does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ’s humanity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Jesus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can “sympathize with our weaknesses,” we can “approach the throne of grace to receive mercy.” For the author of Hebrews, the humanity of Jesus was an essential requirement for his redemptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles. (4) Page 4. B. October 17, 2021. A. On October 4, people all over the world celebrated the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. In remembrance of Saint Francis’s love for all God's creatures, two Blessings occurred at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, presided over by Pastor Mike O'Connell. At Saint Pascal Church, the blessing took place at 3:30 PM in the Dakin Street lot, while the second blessing took place at Saint Bartholomew Church at 4:00 PM in the gated area on the north side of the church.. World Mission Sunday 2021 Next weekend, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis tells us, “Once we experience the power of God’s love, and recognize his presence in our personal and community life, we cannot help but proclaim and share what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20) World Mission Sunday is one way to proclaim and share the Good News with our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world. I am originally from Medellin, Colombia, but the United States has been my home now for almost 20 years. I am very excited to be part of this community and to have the opportunity to share my faith and art with all of you. I was born into a Catholic family, and attended Catholic elementary school until my parents enrolled me in a music conservatory at the age of 10. Music and spirituality have been a part of my life, and I consider them intrinsically related. Music has a power of expression that transcends human existence, a vehicle that exalts our feelings in worship. I place my talents in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ, such that a great miracle happens in my life: God’s blessings magically nurture my every day. Living God’s word is something that all of us should work to achieve. We all are God’s children and He is ready to show us the path and give us his divine love so that we may embrace our lives and fulfill our existence. Since I moved to Chicago, I have been experiencing the great diversity that the city has to offer, especially since working at the Archdiocese of Chicago, where multiple cultures and traditions are always merging. Working with children and adults from the Philippines, Latin America, Italy, Poland, Africa, Ireland, and other countries has made me encounter wonderful and challenging experiences; these have been some of the most beautiful lessons in my life. Now, we are confronting a lot of challenges in our society but it is together as one church that we will succeed. United in the midst of our diversity and through the power of the love of Jesus Christ we can overcome our doubts and fears. I am ready to work with you, share my ideas and listen to yours; I'm ready to support and help each other in the process of our efforts to “Renew My Church”; Ready to praise and worship our Lord Jesus Christ through our music! Desde que llegue a Chicago he tenido que experimentar la maravillosa diversidad que la ciudad tiene para ofrecernos, especialmente desde que trabajo para la arquidiócesis; Donde múltiples culturas y tradiciones se unen y fusionan. He trabajado con niños y adultos de Filipinas, Latinoamérica, Italia, Polonia, Irlanda entre otras y esto ha hecho que me encontrarme con grandes retos y maravillosas experiencias, una de las mas hermosas lecciones de mi vida. Leadership is about servanthood, even when it entails suffering and giving one’s life. The only way to glory is by self-emptying, serving, giving one’s life. Much of our doing for others is simply part of our everyday life, for example, parents taking care of children, spouses doing thoughtful things for each other, a co-worker cooperating with others in the office. Being a “slave” of all, as Jesus says, isn’t always something extra or big; most of the time it is simply doing our everyday tasks and keeping in mind that others are the body of Christ. It is doing our everyday tasks with loving care. Jesús respondió a sus discípulos diciendo que el liderazgo no se trata de poder -- “dominando al prójimo” u ostentando autoridad. A Prayer Shawl is a gift that is handcrafted with prayers, wrapped in love in order to bring comfort to the recipient, and blessings to the donor. When we stitch a prayer shawl for those we love and care about, we are following Jesus’s example for as we stitch, the crocheters and knitters pray for the person for whom we are creating the shawl. A prayer shawl can be a way to reach out to others who are hurting or simply a way to let someone know we are thinking of them. Upon completion the shawls are blessed before they are given out. All recipients are listed and prayed for monthly at one of our Masses. Since our start in 2010 we have given out 1,849 shawls. If you would like to join our ministry or are in need of a shawl, please contact the Saint Pascal parish office (773-725-7641), and they will notify a Prayer Shawl Committee member who will be happy to contact you. ¿Qué es un chal de oración?
