3rd Sunday of Easter
"Jesus said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?'" Three times, Simon Peter had denied Jesus. Now, three times, the risen Christ gives Peter the opportunity to announce his love. Although Peter was "distressed" by the Lord's repeated question, ultimately this must have been a healing moment in Peter's life. He finally had the opportunity to assure Jesus that he loved him, thereby making up for his earlier failure and weak-ness on the night of the Crucifixion. Jesus' death on the cross sufficed to forgive us of our sins. But his resurrec-tion assures us that there is new life on the other side of our sinfulness. Just as Jesus had the power to conquer death, so too through his grace we have the power to conquer our sins. We can live a resurrected life, we can have a new beginning, just as Peter did that day at the Sea of Tiberias when he pledged his faith anew. This pledge of faith, it's interesting to note, also came with a kind of commission. Each time that Peter told the Lord he loved him, Jesus responded with a command: "Feed my lambs," "Tend my sheep," and "Feed my sheep." Of course, we know that Jesus had already established Peter as the "rock" on which he built his church, as the first pope. Now, Jesus was emphasizing the connection be-tween loving him--the Good Shepherd--and loving his people, his flock, his church. Peter's love for Christ was meant to be manifested in his love and care for the church, as is the case with every pope. But it's also true for every Christian. We are called not just to relish the gift of forgiveness and the grace of new life in Christ, but to take the next step of loving and serving those around us.
"Vengan a almorzar" (Jn 21, 12).
Sharing the Gospel
When the apostles ran out of food, they went fishing. They fished all night long, but they didn't catch anything. In the early hours of the morning, they saw Jesus standing on shore. He told them to put their nets down in the water on the right side of their boat. They caught so many fish that their net was filled to the top. They were very glad they had listened to Jesus. After Jesus rose from the dead, he must have looked very different. Jesus helped his apostles catch a lot of fish, just as he had done before. Jesus invited his friends to eat with him, and he still broke his bread to share it in the same way he always had. The disciples still recognized Jesus by the things he did.
Prayer
Lord, help me listen and follow the directions of my parents.
Something to Draw
Draw Jesus near the apostles in a boat with a net full of fish.
Mission for the Week
Gracias, Padre Kenneth J. Grande
2016 Annual Catholic Appeal - Share The Joy Of The Gospel
The 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal teaches the importance to renew our faith through acts of charity and emphasizes the responsibility parishioners have in supporting their parish, as well as the diocesan min-istries, programs and services that are carried out in our communities through the Annual Catholic Ap-peal. A Catholic Steward reaches out in many ways. Through the Annual Catholic Appeal we support
many programs, ministries and services and most importantly, people. This year’s theme captures the
call to be Church through our Holy Father Pope Francis’ Encyclical Evangelii Gaudium - The Joy of the
Gospel to go forth as a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. We are encouraged in a special way in this 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal to share the Joy of the Gospel: by teaching and modeling Christian values; by practicing works of mercy, charity, and consolation; by giving to the ACA whose ministries and services share our Catholic faith throughout Brooklyn and Queens. Through your ACA donations we share the Joy of the Gospel with our children, our youth and young adults, our sick and elderly. We share the Joy of the Gospel when we help young couples prepare for marriage, prepare for the baptism of their child, prepare their children for First Holy Communion. We share the Joy of the Gospel when we support our seminarians through prayer and financial gifts. When you give a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal your dollars are distributed among the services and ministries that are carried out in our diocese of Brooklyn and Queens and in our parish. Please prayerfully consider the sacrificial pledge you would like to make to our Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal for this year 2016. Whatever the amount of your gift, it will be
