CATHEDRAL CRUCIFIX

The days of our salvation began, fittingly, in a garden. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came here to wipe away the sins of a withered world, sins that started with Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the paradise of Eden. The three principal circumstances of Jesus’ late life — passion and death and resurrection — converge in the miracles of the Pascal Mystery,
“paschal” a word derived from Passover, the celebration of the Israelites’ deliverance from a long, sad slavery in Egypt.
Jesus crucified stands tall over the shrine there in our
cathedral’s southeastern alcove. In His suffering, now obvious and brutal, so masterfully sculpted, Our Lord gives out, in three infernal hours, all the love in His heart. And that magnificent crucifix compresses every minute, it seems, enforcing in an instant all the meaning, all the sacrifice, all the wondrous and ongoing effects of the second-greatest event in human history. The gathering impetus of the sculpture serves well the overwhelming importance of Jesus’ redemptive gift.
*The statue stands 7’6”, weighing five hundred pounds, while the cross stretches 13’6”x9’.
*The cross’ back is hand-formed fiberglass, appearing as a rough-cut timber.
*Two steel beams support the bronze corpus.
*Wood from Israel forms the front of the cross.
*The twelve stones at the base once hid at the bottom of the Jordan River, those rocks symbolizing the twelve apostles, the tribes of Israel, and other Biblical imagery throughout.
*The sign at the top of the cross speaks the sacred name of our Redeemer, “Jesus the Nazarean, the King of the Jews,” the very words we believe to have been nailed to Jesus’ cross. St.
John testifies (19:20) that the original nameplate bore the inscription in three languages — Aramaic, Latin, and Greek — a plate still revered in the Church of Santa Croce in
Gerusalemme in Rome.
*As with Mary and Joseph, this statue of a dying Jesus rode with its creators, Rip and Alison Caswell, over the Rocky Mountains from Mount Angel Abbey in St. Benedict, Oregon to Central and Broadway in downtown Wichita, Kansas.
The suffering so evident in every inch of our Savior’s precious body, the horror brought about by our sins, stands as an unmistakable emblem of divine love, of God’s willingness to take on the human form, to at last determine that death is not final, not futile. And what might punctuate this unblinking look at the cost, the fateful price of our mistakes more pointedly than the tomb of a Kansas priest destined for sanctity? Our Father Kapaun lies there before Jesus in the minutes just before His death. A selfless, generous giver of meager but holy and sanctified gifts, Father Kapaun too knows sacrifice. He too has endured cruelty for its own evil sake. Like Jesus, Emil has triumphed. Together the carpenter and the farm boy have shown us the way.
Los días de nuestra salvación comenzaron, apropiadamente, en un jardín. Nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo vino aquí para borrar los pecados de un mundo marchito, pecados que comenzaron con la desobediencia de Adán y Eva en el paraíso del Edén. En ocasiones usted escuchará estas declaraciones del público en general, pero es mas común dicha por politicos tratando de manejar de manera “suave” el tema del aborto. El truco es aparentar una filosofía pro-vida para que asi no tengan que defender la realidad del aborto, pero de manera funcional son pro- aborto, para así no incomodar a los partidarios del aborto.
Ellos creen que esta es una visión sagaz, cuando en realidad es una bastante cobarde; desafortunadamente, por conveniencia política, muchos de nuestros politicos “católicos” toman esta hipócrita y vergonzosa posición.
Tiene que entenderse que la única base lógica para que alguien
“se oponga de manera personal al aborto” es porque ha entendido que el aborto termina con la vida de un ser humano inocente.
Mientras se jactan de creer en eso, sin embargo, apoyan la legalización del aborto.
Entonces, lo que realmente están diciendo es : “ el aborto es el asesinato intencional de un niño indefenso, pero yo no haría nada por detenerlo. Estoy dispuesto a ver hacia otro lado mientras alguien más toma la vida de un niño”.
Esta es una cortina de humo, solo un cobarde o hipócrita
reconocería como seres humanos a los niños aun no nacidos, pero se desentendería del asunto si alguien quiere abortarlos.
Es lo mismo que decir que se oponen a las violaciones sexuales pero no es de su incumbencia si los hombres desean violar mujeres, o si las violaciones no son un área en la que deba involucrarse el gobierno.
Vivimos en una nación donde mas de 3500 niños inocentes pierden la vida cada dia ante el acto intencional del aborto. Si ésta no es un área de interés legítimo para el gobierno. Entonces el gobierno no tiene legítimo interés en realidad.

"I am opposed to abortion, but I don't believe I have the right to impose my personal beliefs on others".
You will sometimes hear this stated by members of the general public, but it is more commonly said by politicians who are trying to
"finesse" the abortion issue. The trick is to appear philosophically pro-life so they do not have to defend the reality of abortion, and functionally, pro-abortion so they do not upset the abortion lobby. They think that this is a shrewd view, when in fact it is just a cowardly one. Unfortunately, for political expediency, many of our
"Catholic" politicians take this hypocritical and shameful position!
Understand that the only logical basis for someone to be
"personally opposed to abortion" is because they realize that abortion terminates the life of an innocent human being. While claiming to believe that however, they say it should be legal.
So what they are really saying is, "Abortion is the intentional killing of a helpless child, but I wouldn't do anything to stop it. I am willing to look the other way while someone else takes the life of a child".
That is a smoke screen. Only a coward and/or a hypocrite would concede that unborn children are living human beings but that it is none of his (or her) business if someone wants to abort them.
It is no different than saying that they are opposed to rape but it is none of their business if men want to rape women, or that rape is not an area in which the government should be involved.
We live in a nation where over 3,500 innocent children lose their lives each and every day to the intentional act of abortion. If this is not an area of legitimate governmental interest, then the
government has no legitimate interest at all!

Baptism
Parents:
Must be parishioners of the Cathedral and be registered at least 1 month before baptism.
They must present a copy of the child's birth certificate so that all names are spelled correctly on the baptismal certificate.
Godparents:
They must be married by the Catholic Church and they must present their marriage certificate (a photo is acceptable).
They have to be confirmed and they must present their certificate of confirmation (a photo is acceptable).
Single sponsors:
They must be over 16 years old.
They must present a copy of their confirmation certificate.
Parents who are not parishioners:
If you want your child to be baptized in the Cathedral, parents must present a letter of permission from their parish priest where they are registered, and all the documents mentioned above. (For example, when the godparents are parishioners and the parents come to the Cathedral from another parish to baptize.)
All must present a certificate or letter verifying that they took the baptism class.
Baptism Classes in English:
1st Wednesday of the month at
7:00 p.m. in the Marian Room; located on second floor of the parish office. Registration is required.
Baptisms:
Monthly on 2nd Saturdays at 6:15 p.m. and monthly on 2nd Sundays at 11:15 a.m.

Congratulations on your future wedding! Please visit our website to request a wedding date (WichitaCathedral.com), or call the parish office at least 9 months prior to the desired date. Our Receptionist, Francesca Chavez, will receive your request and contact you to schedule your date. She will then put you in contact with Fr. Keiter or Fr. Shepherd for marriage preparation.

Quinceañeras
Requirements: Young women must be baptized, have received First Communion, and have been confirmed or are currently in Confirmation Class. All Young women must also take a
Quinceañera class, which begins the second Tuesday of February/September .

Quinceañeras
Requisitos: Las jóvenes deben estar bautizadas, haber recibido la Primera Comunión, y haber sido Confirmadas o que estén actualmente en clase de Confirmación. Todas las jóvenes también deben tomar una clase de Quinceañera, que comienza el segundo Martes de Febrero y Septiembre.
