The Parish Finance Council is pleased to include the 2010-2011 fiscal report with this week’s bulletin. This report covers the fiscal year ended August 31, 2011.

Two very significant financial notes for the past year are:

The reduction of the Cislini Center loan balance from $1,081,556 to $197,872. This reduc-tion allows for some “financial breathing room” allowing for a change in the debt payment schedule. Starting with the new fiscal year the School will take over responsibility for all interest on the remaining loan and the Parish will continue with principal payments of $2,000 per month.

The parish general operating account closed the year in the black to the tune of $13,000. This is very significant because this is only the second time in many years we have closed a year with a positive balance. Also, we started the year with a negative balance in excess of $117,000, so ending the year with a positive balance is quite an accomplishment.

In addition to this good news for last year, the Finance Council has balanced this year’s upcom-ing budget and done so without relyupcom-ing on bequests or extraordinary donations. Therefore, any such monies received in the future can be applied to the Cislini debt. In the past we have had to use such bequests to help with funding of general operations.

A big thank you goes out to all parishioners for their generosity to the weekly plate collections. The annual plate was up from $564,315 to $571,775 from the previous year. Your generosity despite the difficult economy is greatly appreciated.

Finally, we are pleased to announce much greater financial control and new policies have been implemented in the parish office. We are also closely monitoring our daily operating expenses in an effort to become even more efficient operationally.

The Finance Council will be providing quarterly fiscal updates in the bulletin to keep the parish continuously informed as to the fiscal condition of the parish. We ask that you continue to keep Sacred Heart in your prayers.

The Parish Finance Council

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS The Liturgy of the Word

On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman

Missal. This week, we explore the Liturgy of the Word.

We know from the Gospels that Jesus himself listened to the inspired word of God and let it shape and form him. Through the liturgy, we do the same. The readings we hear at Mass can teach us, but that is not their primary function. Rather, the scriptures are meant to reveal the Lord to us, to let us experience God’s presence, and to form us in our Christian iden-tity. In the readings proclaimed at Mass, we hear the voice of Christ himself, and we recognize the story of God acting in the past and in our own lives as well. The homily helps us to see these connections more clearly. Then through the Profession of Faith (Creed) and the Prayer of the Faithful, our response to the readings prepares us to enter into the Eucharistic Prayer that follows.
