TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — I have lifted high the lowly tree
(Ezekiel 17:22-24).
Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you
(Psalm 92).
Second Reading — Whether we are at home or away, we
aspire to please the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-10).
Gospel — It is the smallest of all seeds, and becomes the
largest of plants (Mark 4:26-34)
THE MASTER STORYTELLER
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master
story-teller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one
thing to something else. In most of his
para-bles, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing
God’s essence or actions with something
fa-miliar to his listeners.
In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus
pro-claims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His
small band of disciples, as insignificant as they
may have felt, would one day produce a
mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by
God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted
by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit
brought forth from those seeds. The extent of
the growth of God’s kingdom cannot be predicted. We must
trust the work of the Master’s hand as we, the mustard plant,
grow and grow.
UN EXCELENTE CUENTISTA
En el Evangelio de hoy, se nos presenta a Jesús como un
ex-celente cuentista. A él le gustaba contar parábolas como una
forma para comparar esto de aquello. En muchas
de las parábolas, Jesús revela quien es Dios al
comparar la naturaleza o acciones de Dios con
alguna situación conocida de su audiencia.
En la parábola de la semilla de mostaza, Jesús
proclama una verdad maravillosa e irrefutable.
Su pequeño grupo de discípulos, tan
insignifican-tes como ellos se hubieran sentido, un día
produ-cirán un reinado poderoso cuyo crecimiento lo
comenzó Dios. Las semillas de este reino fueron
plantadas por Dios y es Dios quien cosechará el
fruto producido por esas semillas. No se puede
predecir que tanto crecerá el Reino de Dios. Debemos confiar
el trabajo de las manos del dueño, así como nosotros, al igual
que la semilla de mostaza, crece y crece.

El volcán de fuego en Guatemala sigue en erupción, dejando a comunidades enteras cubiertas en ceniza. El número de muertos por el volcán sigue subiendo centenares a medida que los rescatistas habren camino a las aldeas devastadas por las mezclas de gas caliente y rocas conocidas como flujos piroclásticos que arrasaron las laderas del volcán.

Donations for our Brothers & Sisters in Guatemala A large volcano in Guatemala continues to erupt, leaving entire communities covered in ash. The death toll from the volcano is expected to climb into the hundreds as rescuers make their way to villages devastated by the mixtures of hot gas and rock - known as pyroclastic flows that swept down the volcano's slopes.
Catholic Relief Services is coordinating efforts to assist victims, opened shelters and starting a collection center to receive essential medicine, clothes and food.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
If you are 18 years of age or older and have not received the
one or more of the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy
Communion and/or Confirmation. Registrations are taking
place in the parish office Monday - Friday from 9:00am to
5:00pm. Classes begin in September. For more information,
please stop by the parish office during office hours for required
documents and applications. You must register before Friday,
August 31, 2018.
