All Souls Day

Dear Parishioners,

Whenever we recite the Apostles’ Creed we proclaim our faith in the continuing presence and action of God in the world by saying:

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

In a sense, our celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls is a celebration of the victory of what began on the first Pentecost. By remembering those who have gone before us into the eternal life of heaven or who are being purified in order to enter into the presence of God, we are remembering our faith in the Holy Spirit. The inexhaustible power of the Holy Spirit came rushing into the world as the fulfillment of the promise of Jesus Christ to remain with us always. Saints are made, and not born. Saints are not self-made either, but rather works of the Holy Spirit. As we remember all our relatives and friends, all the great canonized saints and especially the humble, silent saints, we thank God for them. In teaching us how to live and believe, they were instruments the Holy Spirit used to open our hearts and minds to the gifts of faith, hope and love. We are all children of God together, through our adoption in baptism, so we all belong together to the great Communion of Saints: the saints, the holy souls, and ourselves. Be-cause we all make up the Body of Christ, we know the saints and holy souls can intercede before God for us, and we remember to intercede for those who are being purified from the effects of sin.

Estimados Feligreses,

Siempre que recitamos el Credo de los Após-toles proclamamos nuestra fe en la continua presen-cia y acción de Dios en el mundo al decir:

Creo en el Espíritu Santo, la Santa Iglesia católica, la comunión de los santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección de la carne y la vida eterna. Amén.

En cierto modo, nuestra celebración de la So-lemnidad de Todos los Santos y la Conmemoración de los Muertos es una celebración de la victoria de lo que comenzó en el primer Pentecostés. Al recordar a quienes se nos adelantaron hacia la vida eterna del cielo o quienes están siendo purificados para entrar en la presencia de Dios, estamos recordando nuestra fe en el Espíritu Santo. El inexhaustible poder del Espíritu Santo vino apresurado al mundo como el cumplimiento de la promesa de Jesucristo de perma-necer con nosotros por siempre.

Los santos son hechos, no nacidos. Los san-tos tampoco se hacen ellos mismos, sino que son obras del Espíritu Santo. Al recordar a todos nuestros familiares y amigos, todos los grandes santos canoni-zados y especialmente los santos humildes y silen-ciosos, damos gracias a Dios por ellos. Al enseñar-nos cómo vivir y creer, ellos fueron instrumentos que el Espíritu Santo utilizó para abrir nuestros corazones y mentes a los dones de fe, esperanza y amor. Todos somos hijos de Dios juntos, por nuestra adopción en el bautismo, así que todos pertenecemos a la gran Comunión de los Santos: los santos, las benditas al-mas, y nosotros mismos. Porque todos formamos el Cuerpo de Cristo, sabemos que los santos y las ben-ditas almas pueden interceder por nosotros ante Dios, y nosotros recordamos interceder por quienes están siendo purificados de los efectos del pecado.
