Feb. 17-18 First Sunday of Lent
This Lenten season begins with the contrasting images of the desert and flood waters. We live in the paradox of these images needing to go into the desert of fasting, prayer and self-denial in order to re-learn the covenant way of life we entered through the waters of baptism.
Now is the time to turn from the flood of distractions which can drown us. Now is the time to remember and reverence our dignity and the dignity of every human person. Now is the time to set aside anything that diverts us from our true hunger and thirst for God alone and his covenant of love with all humanity.
Febrero 17-18
humanidad.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO
Dear parishioners,
The First Sunday of Lent carries a special meaning.
The temptation of Jesus in the desert in the Gospel reading from Saint Mark is brief. It is interesting to note that Jesus is not alone in this ordeal of forty days. He is “driven”
into the desert by the Spirit and is among wild beasts and angels minister to him. This brief account helps us to see clearly that in the forty days of Lent we are accompanied by the Holy Spirit and ministered to by the angels. And, we are among wild beasts!
Pope Saint John XXIII wrote: “O Lord Jesus, leaving your home at Nazareth and your sweet Mother, you wished to experience solitude, weariness and hunger. To the tempter who proposed to you the trial of miracles, you replied with the strength of eternal wisdom, in itself a miracle of heavenly grace. It is Lent!”
The violet altar hangings for Lent are newly purchased and funded from the Sunday collection. Thank you for giving in many ways. It is my hope that as you look upon the altar that you will see the holy result of your spirit of generosity.
Violet as a liturgical color has an interesting history.
The violet of Lent is a purple with a red hue to evoke the Precious Blood of Christ. The violet of Advent is a purple with a blue hue reminiscent of the color of the night sky at the birth of Our Lord. The red-purple of Lent is called roman purple. This is because Caesar, the Emperor wore this particular color. The apostles chose this color for Lent to display the reality that this world and all of its glory is passing and that the beauty of holiness that is signified by the Easter white is the true and eternal reality.
Your Pastor, Father David.
Queridos Feligreses,
Padre David.

A Lent to Remember
…explores the ways God reaches out to each of us with his mercy. Through Christ’s suffering on the cross in the Paschal Mystery and his perpetual reception of his people in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God makes his love, his very self, present to us in the world.
