Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." Mt. 5:13-16

Jesus fully revealed the glory of the Father, in the same way the very nature of a Catholic is to love as Jesus loves us so that all may glorify our heavenly Father. You are the voice, the hands the love of Jesus living in the world today. All the good you do reveal the love of God and His wonders. As you shine in the light

of Jesus so that all may see your light, they are transformed and given hope. In our world, today there are billions who live in fear and darkness, where tomorrow fails to have any hope. Politicians frequently abuse the power of their office, dividing and intimidat-ing millions through a cloud of darkness and distorted percep-tions of reality. Catholics have been given the mission of being the light of hope to the world, beginning in our own families and neighborhoods. Through you, Members of the body of Christ, the Lord longs to radiate his Justice, Peace, Unity, Mercy and

Recon-ciliation. Listen to the Word of God living in the Church, Listen to Pope Frances as he teaches us how to live the joy of life, receive

the light of the Lord and “Shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father”.

On Building walls, banning people and being great.

It is a most sad time when being “Great” means that walls are to be built, specific people are excluded, and the goal is to make us first. The goal of every human life is to learn how to “Love” as Catholics we clearly understand that we are to love as Jesus loves us. Our Lives are a process of continual conversion, through which

we are loved into fuller life. We are filled with hope and carry the light of Jesus. We fully understand the struggle of how to live the truth of Jesus each day, we know the goal, but the way is Jesus

who leads us. Today the Lord has chosen Pope Frances as his vicar on earth to guide us in the way to the Joy of life. Take time to listen to him, listen to the political forces around us, and in the light of Jesus confront the differences and struggle to let you light shine so that all darkness may be dispelled. Pope Frances call all God’s People to dialogue, to struggle together in healing the world.

He clearly teaches that building walls, banning peoples and the perceived need to be first at the detriment of others are all very

wrong, and are contrary to the way of healthy living.

Jesús reveló plenamente la gloria del Padre, de la misma manera que un católico ama, como Jesús nos ama para que todos glorifi-quen a nuestro Padre celestial. Tú eres la voz, las manos, el amor

de Jesús que vive en el mundo de hoy. Todo el bien que haces revela el amor de Dios y Sus maravillas. Cuando ustedes brillan en

la luz de Jesús para que todos puedan ver su luz, se transforman y dan esperanza. En nuestro mundo, hoy hay miles de millones que viven en el miedo y la oscuridad, donde no hay esperanza para

el próximo día. Los políticos frecuentemente abusan del poder de su cargo, dividiendo e intimidando a millones a través de una nube de oscuridad y percepciones distorsionadas de la realidad. A

Hoy el Señor ha elegido al Papa Francisco como su vicario en la tierra para guiarnos en el camino hacia el gozo de la vida. Toma tiempo para escucharlo, escucha a las fuerzas políticas

Acerca de Nuestra Liturgia

Use of candles at Mass: The liturgical requirement for the use of candles at Mass simply states that at least two lit candles should be on or next to the altar and even four or six may be used (especially at festival times) and these may be the candles carried in procession (GIRM 117). The origin of lit candles, of course, was

functional; before the time of electricity, candles were necessary even in daytime because the churches tended to be rather dark. Now candles are no longer functional but symbolic: they remind us of Christ the Light of the world; in the context of this Sunday’s gospel they also remind us that we ourselves are to be light that shines in the darkness. One pastoral practice that has sprung up is that some churches have candle stands both at the altar and at the ambo. Since this fulfills the requirement of the law, this practice is no problem and underscores the importance of both the table (“ambo” comes from the Greek meaning “reading table”) of the word and the table of the Eucharist. Questionable symbolism arises, however, when four candles are used (two at ambo, two at altar) and the two at the ambo are blown out at the conclusion of the Liturgy of the Word and the two at the altar lit, or when just two lit candles are used and they are carried from the ambo to be placed in empty candle stands at the altar. The problem with this is that we give the impression that one part is “over” and the next part “begins.” In terms of the chronology of the ritual, this is true because we humans live in space and time. However, in terms of the meaning of the rite, the Liturgy of the Word cannot be sepa-rated from the Liturgy of the Eucharist and, indeed, neither are “finished” but continue into our Christian living.

Living the Paschal Mystery

While the gospel uses metaphors to help us understand who we are as disciples of Jesus, this is not simply pretty language that may give us a poetic thrill but then be for-gotten. The first reading makes very concrete the gospel metaphors. We are vindicated when we act

decisively as God acts: we are to feed the hun-gry, “shelter the oppressed and the homeless,” “clothe the naked,” remove oppression and refrain from “malicious speech.” Practically speaking for us today, this might mean that we get involved in some of the parish minis-tries directed to social outreach; or we might tutor one of the schoolchildren. Maybe being Christ-salty or Christ-shining simply means that we take stock of our already too-busy days and reflect on what has value or meaning for the good of others and what has become

habit to no real avail. Discipleship always involves ongo-ing discernment about how we are in relation to God and others. Anything short of being the best person we can be as God’s instruments of salvation is selling short being true to ourselves.

Viviendo el Misterio Pascual

Child abuse can happen anywhere, even in the home, and for families placed in this horrible situation, reporting abuse can be very difficult, but it is critical to do so in order to protect children. Adults must first act to stop the abuse by being alert to warning signs. If discovered, report abuse to the proper authorities.
