“There will be plenty for all” these words come from our first reading today and are reiterated in the gospel story of the multiplica- tion of the loaves and fish. These readings remind us of God’s generosity, his providence and loving care. This is especially true when we feel inadequate to the task of being a disciple of Christ. Ponder these words, “There will be plenty for all” and throughout the week, open your eyes and heart for the ways that God does indeed provide for you in both big and small ways. You will find that God is generous beyond your expectations!

MISSION SUPPORT FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF TORORO UGANDA



The Archdiocese of Tororo, covering an approximate area of 8,500 square miles, serves an estimated population of 3.6 million people, about 1.2 million of whom are Catholic. These are some of our needs.

1) Parishes: caring for 45 parishes 984 missions or sub-parishes 2) Formation of pastoral ministers

Currently we have about 315 seminarians, about a quarter of whom will proceed on to the major seminary. We have about 40 seminarians studying in the philosophical and theological seminaries.

We currently have 117 native diocesan priests and 9 religious priests. Once ordained, our priests need to continue their formation, especially by attending educational workshops and spiritual retreats.

The 945 catechists serve the mission churches (sub-parishes).

3) Transportation of pastoral ministers: The priests and catechists need to travel to and from the mission churches, usually scooters and bicycles.

4) Education: In collaboration with the Government of Uganda, the Archdiocese runs several Primary, Secondary and Tech- nical schools. Most of these schools, run by our 16 native religious brothers and 243 native religious sisters, are in rural set- tings where there is no electricity, no computers and not enough textbooks and laboratory equipment. The teaching and learn- ing process becomes very difficult in such an environment.

5) Health: The Archdiocese has one hospital, three sub-hospitals and twelve small medical facilities through which we try to fulfill Christ’s ministry of physical healing. These facilities, usually run by the religious sisters are not funded by the Government and must depend on user fees to purchase drugs and equipment and cover the cost of personnel.

6) Economic development: The Archdiocese of Tororo, through its development arm CARITAS, empowers the laity with skills that can improve their economic base. 69% of the people are peasant farmers with small plots of land on which to cultivate their crops. Because of this, most of them live from hand to mouth, which has an adverse impact on their income. Through CARI- TAS-Tororo, the Archdiocese runs programs, especially in the area of improved agricultural methods, so that families can sus- tain themselves better economically.

7) Women: Archdiocesan Women’s Desk focuses on the realities of women. When empowered, women can do a great deal to improve their families’ economic situation as well as the sanitary condition of their homes.

8) Water: Our Five-Year Strategic Plan includes a program to increase access to clean, safe water. Presently only 72% of our people have access to improved water sources; the rest have to rely on unprotected springs and wells.

APOYO A LA MISIÓN DE LA ARQUIDIÓCESA DE TORORO UGANDA

La Arquidiócesis de Tororo, con una superficie aproximada de 8500 millas cuadradas, sirve a una población esti- mada de 3.6 millones de personas, de las cuales aproximadamente 1.2 millones son católicos.

A) Actualmente tenemos un número récord de alrededor de 315 seminaristas, de los cuales un cuarto generalmente asisten al seminario mayor. Tenemos alrededor de 40 seminaristas que estudian en los seminarios mayores.

B) Una vez ordenados, nuestros sacerdotes deben continuar su formación, especialmente asistiendo a talleres educativos y retiros espirituales. Actualmente tenemos 117 sacerdotes diocesanos y 9 sacerdotes religiosos.

C) Si bien el sacerdote es el responsable general de las parroquias, son ayudados por 945 catequistas que básicamente los sustituyen en las iglesias de la misión.

3) Transporte de Ministros Pastorales

Este ministerio requiere transporte tanto para los sacerdotes como para los catequistas; de lo contrario, tienen que caminar de ida y vuelta a las iglesias de la misión, a veces durante aproximadamente tres horas.

4) Educación

En colaboración con el Gobierno de Uganda, la Arquidiócesis dirige varias escuelas primarias, secundarias y técnicas. La ma- yoría de estas escuelas, dirigidas por hermanas y hermanos religiosos, se encuentran en entornos rurales donde no hay elec- tricidad, ni computadoras, ni suficientes libros de texto ni equipos de laboratorio. El proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje se vuelve muy difícil en tal ambiente.

5) Salud

La Arquidiócesis tiene un hospital, tres hospitales secundarios y doce instalaciones médicas pequeñas a través de las cuales tratamos de cumplir el ministerio de sanación física de Cristo. Estas instalaciones no están financiadas por el Gobierno; por lo tanto, deben depender de las tarifas de los usuarios para comprar medicamentos y equipos y cubrir el costo del personal.

6) Desarrollo Económico

La Arquidiócesis de Tororo, a través de su brazo de desarrollo CARITAS, capacita a los laicos con habilidades que pueden me- jorar su base económica. El 69% de las personas son campesinos con pequeñas parcelas de tierra para cultivar sus cultivos. A través de CARITAS-Tororo, la Arquidiócesis dirige programas, especialmente en el área de métodos agrícolas mejorados, para que las familias puedan sostenerse mejor económicamente.

7) Mujeres
