Saturday Holy Saturday Vigil:
I. Holy Week: Brothers and Sisters, a year ago, it was necessary for us to celebrate Holy Week virtually; like all other pastors, I live-streamed our liturgies from an empty church. Thankfully, this year, the liturgies will be open to the public, though, with a limited capacity and with
simplified liturgies. It won’t quite be a normal Holy Week, but the circumstances are better than last year.
What makes Holy Week ‘holy’ is the fact that we are doing some very sacred
remembering. We commemorate the final week of the Lord’s earthly life. The liturgies, though
separate celebrations, form one remembrance of the Lord’s redeeming act that won for us the avenue to eternal life. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are referred to as the Sacred Triduum, meaning, the ‘three holy days.’ Although there are three liturgies over three days, all that Jesus did on those three days is considered one saving act for the benefit of our eternal salvation.
For our Catechumens, the Elect, this is the final week of their preparation and waiting. At the Easter Vigil, 20 Catechumens will celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Please keep them in your prayers.
As always, all liturgies will be livestreamed via Facebook Live on the Facebook Page of ‘Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish El Paso’. This is the schedule:
Holy Thursday (1 April): bi-lingual Mass of the Last Supper of the Lord at 5:00pm. Because of the pandemic, there are some changes. There will be no Rite of Washing of Feet; we will not do the traditional distribution of bread after the Mass; and there will not be the usual time of Adoration after Mass; for that reason, there will be no Altar of Repose. As soon as the Holy Thursday Mass ends, all will go home. Perhaps in your homes, you can share some special bread and have a little quiet prayer time.
Good Friday (2 April): bi-lingual liturgy at 2:00pm. Good Friday is the only day of the year we do not celebrate Mass. The liturgy is simply called, Liturgy of Good Friday. Because of the pandemic, there will not be the usual Veneration of the Cross during the liturgy. Also, since we do not have enough Lectors at this time, the proclamation of the Passion will be a short version, not the long format usually proclaimed by several Lectors.
Holy Saturday (3 April): Last year, our Catechumens were not baptized until July. This year, our Catechumens will be baptized at an early Easter Vigil Mass at 4:00pm. Because of the pandemic, the liturgy is simplified. There will not be a Blessing of Fire or the use of the small candles. The new Easter Candle will simply be lit and blessed.
There will be the Blessing of Water for the baptism rite. As we do each year, a sufficient amount of water will be blessed for those who wish to take some home. You will have to bring your own small bottle. Holy Water is not for drinking, ever. It is only used to bless people, homes or animals.
The Holy Saturday liturgy is principally for the Catechumens, their families and godparents. Apart from them, 40 additional parishioners can also attend. Apart from the Catechumens and their families, all others must register for the Easter Vigil by calling our office.
Easter Sunday (4 April): Mass in Spanish at 10:00am; Mass in English at 12:00pm. Easter Octave: The ancient tradition of the Church has been to celebrate the Birth of the Lord and the Resurrection of the Lord for eight days. It may sound like a contradiction. In the mind of the Church, the events we celebrate on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday cannot be confined to just one day. So, the Church celebrates what is called an “Octave”, meaning, Eight Days.
There is a biblical reference to eight-day celebrations in the Book of Leviticus. In
Christian history, the first Christian emperor, Constantine I, established the custom of eight-day celebrations for the dedication of new Christian basilicas. “Octave” is rooted in the Latin word for ‘eight’.
Because of the pandemic, the bishop is offering all parishioners of the diocese the option of attending Easter Mass on any day of the Octave. In other words, if you do not feel
comfortable attending Mass on Easter Sunday because of the larger number of people, then you can fulfill your Easter obligation by attending the 4:00pm Mass on Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday or Easter Thursday in English; Easter Wednesday in Spanish; or, Easter Friday at 10:15am, the Mass I live-stream for Loretto Academy. Attendance at weekday Masses is always very low.
II. Semana Santa: Hermanos y Hermanas, hace un año era necesario que celebráramos la Semana Santa de forma virtual; como todos los demás pastores, transmití en vivo las liturgias desde una iglesia vacía. Afortunadamente, este año, las liturgias estarán abiertas al público, aunque con una capacidad limitada y con liturgias simplificadas. No será una Semana Santa normal, pero las circunstancias son mejores que el año pasado.
Lo que hace que la Semana Santa sea "santa" es el hecho de que estamos recordando algo muy sagrado. Conmemoramos la última semana de la vida terrenal del Señor. Las liturgias, aunque celebraciones separadas, forman un recuerdo del acto redentor del Señor que nos ganó el camino hacia la vida eterna. III. Health Protocols: In the Diocese of El Paso, Sunday Mass attendance is limited to 25% capacity. For us at St. Thomas Aquinas, this means that about 125 people can be
accommodated. All must wear a facemask and observe physical distancing while inside our buildings. Please sanitize your hands when entering and leaving the church, using the stations in the Gathering Area.

VII. Migrant & Refugee Services: Thankfully, our country has returned to the
implementation of its normal immigration procedures. This means that migrants and refugees are being given legal entry into the United States. As in 2019, Annunciation House will be leading the effort to care for the refugees who are coming into El Paso.
Refugees will be guests either at Annunciation House itself, or at area hotels. If you wish to volunteer for cooking or driving refugees to the bus station or airport, you can call Megan Bayes at Annunciation House at 915-213-3189.

VIII. Servicios para Migrantes y Refugiados: Afortunadamente, nuestro país ha vuelto a la implementación de sus procedimientos de inmigración normales. XIII. Wedding Protocols: With the improved situation regarding covid infections, the bishop will allow the resumption of weddings after Easter. However, there is still the need for
restrictions. Please take note of the protocols that we will need to follow at our parish with regard to weddings:
-a limit of 20 guests, seated according to physical distancing guidelines, all with facemasks; -only the bride may enter in procession with her parents or other escort; no court;
-Maid of Honor and Best Man will already be at their places inside the church; -Liturgy is a Liturgy of the Word, not a full Wedding Mass;
-after the final blessing at Mass, all guests must exit the church and go outside to the fountain area in front of the church before the new spouses leave the Altar;
-couples must still do the Marriage Preparation required by the Diocese of El Paso;
-the two schedule options are as before, on Saturdays at 10:00am or 11:30am, or another day of the week, except Sundays.
-keep in mind that if the health situation in El Paso worsens unexpectedly, the bishop will suspend the celebration of weddings and funerals until it is once again safe for these liturgies. -for information, leave a message at our office for Deacon Joe and Helen Soto, 592-1313, x 101 XIV. Protocolos para Bodas: Con la mejora de la situación con respecto a las infecciones por covid, el obispo permitirá la reanudación de las bodas después de Semana Santa. XV. Funeral Protocols: The bishop has authorized the resumption of funerals in the parishes of our diocese. Parishes are allowed to resume the celebration of funerals according to parish circumstances. Most of our Lay Ministers, such as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and Ushers, are not yet willing to resume their ministries because of the pandemic. For that reason, I can only permit a maximum of 20 persons to attend a funeral Mass at our parish. Also, given our limited staff schedules, I ask that you try to schedule funerals for your loved ones in the early afternoon on weekdays.
As before, when our parish office is contacted for a funeral, our Bereavement Ministry will follow up with the family in order to plan the funeral Mass. After almost one year, it is good that we can resume funerals, even if it is in a limited manner.
In cases of cremation, please remember that Catholic Church liturgical norms require the burial of ashes immediately after the Funeral Mass. It is not normally permissible in our
Catholic tradition, to retain human remains in the home. We understand that many families may have retained cremains in their home because of the prohibition on public funerals.
However, normally, the dignity of the human remains require burial according to the burial rites of the Church after the Funeral Mass.
XVI. Protocolos Funerarios: El obispo ha autorizado la reanudación de los funerales en las parroquias de nuestra diócesis. Las parroquias pueden reanudar la celebración de los funerales según las circunstancias de la parroquia. La mayoría de nuestros ministros laicos, como
lectores, ministros eucarísticos y ujieres, aún no están dispuestos a reanudar sus ministerios debido a la pandemia. Por esa razón, solo puedo permitir que un máximo de 20 personas asistan a una misa fúnebre en nuestra parroquia. Además, dados los horarios limitados de nuestro

VII. Baptism Protocols: The baptism of infants will resume in the Easter Season. Five families will be invited to have their children baptized during the 4:00pm Saturday Vigil Mass beginning on 10 April. We ask the parents to bring only their own children and the godparents to participate in the Mass. It is still necessary to limit our capacity inside the church. The health protocols will remain in place, meaning that everyone will have to wear their face mask. We want to protect the health of everyone, particularly the children and babies.
On a first come, first serve basis, families can register for the following dates:
April 10th, 17th, & 24th; May 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd. Families must arrive for Mass by 3:30pm in
order to be seated. We need time to make sure that everyone is seated according to physical distancing norms. Please understand that any family arriving after 3:45pm will be asked to register for another date. Please contact our parish office for information about registration for the baptism Mass: 915-592-1313, x101.
In June, moving forward, we will resume the usual baptism schedule on the second Saturday of the month, one ceremony in English; one in Spanish.
XVIII. Protocolos Bautismales: El bautismo de infantes se reanudará en la temporada de Pascua. Se invitará a cinco familias a bautizar a sus hijos durante la misa de vigilia del sábado a las 4:00 pm que comienza el 10 de abril. Pedimos a los padres que solo traigan a sus propios hijos y padrinos para participar en la Misa. Aún es necesario limitar nuestra capacidad dentro de la iglesia. XIX. VIRTUS: Our parish Safe Environment Coordinator, Mr. Manny Reyes, has completed an audit of our parish, as required by the bishop. The audit shows that we have a very large number of Lay Ministers who are not current with their VIRTUS updates or training. Some Lay Ministers are on the verge of having their VIRTUS accounts suspended until they are made current.
Please contact Mr. Reyes as soon as possible to check on your status. He will explain whatever it is you need to do to update your status. Remember, if your account is suspended, you cannot serve in your ministry. We need all of our Lay Ministers, so please, get your accounts updated!
VIRTUS is the child safety program of our diocese. All clergy, employees, lay ministers and volunteers must take the VIRTUS training; it is not optional. Once the initial training is taken, updates are done online.

XX. VIRTUS: El Coordinador de Ambiente Seguro de nuestra parroquia, el Sr. Manny Reyes, ha completado una auditoría de nuestra parroquia, como lo requirió el obispo. La auditoría muestra que tenemos una gran cantidad de ministros laicos que no están al día con sus
