Silver Memories

On this day 25 years ago, the “Phoenix Lights” were seen over Arizona, Nevada, and Sonora, Mexico, by thousands of eyewitnesses. Between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m., observers saw strange lights in the sky. A series of stationary lights appeared in the sky over Phoenix, while a massive triangular formation of lights moved

through the sky over the state, with witnesses describing it as a huge, carpenter’s-square-shaped UFO. Even Fife Symington, Arizona’s governor, saw the lights. While the Air Force contends that the lights were military flares, many folks believe the lights were from another world.

England might be a hotbed of tea drinking, but it was New Yorker Thomas Sullivan who invented the first teabag. Prior to the teabag, tea leaves were sold loosely in tins. In 1908, Sullivan, in an effort to market his teas, had the bright idea to send tea samples wrapped in silken pouches to his customers.

While it was not Sullivan’s intention, his customers simply put the pouch into hot water. It was a quick way to get a single cup of tea without the messy cleanup. Thanks to the innovation of his customers, Sullivan became a success.
