FAITH FORMATION 2021-2022

We are excited to open 2021-2022 Faith Formation registra- tion! We are preparing an array of programs for our families, children, and teens to grow in their faith and fall deeper in love with God. Please note the programs listed below are now open for registration. It is our hope to create opportunities for family engagement throughout the year. Please review our programs below, and if there are any questions, or if there is anything we can do to assist you, please do not hesi- tate to contact us.

Family Centered Programs

Family Forming Disciples - Like other parishes around us, we are adapting the Archdiocesan family program, Families Forming Disciples (FFD). FFD will serve as the primary faith formation program for children of all ages, but specifically directed toward families with children 4 to 12 years old. It will be available in English and in Spanish. Groups of families with children of similar ages will meet with catechists online and in person to encounter the Lord together and encourage one another.

Catechist of the Good Shepherd - In addition, we are pleased to bring back the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for Fami- lies. This program has been so popular that space is limited.

This program thrives on parental participation.

Youth Centered Programs

STA YDisciple - Open to all youth in 7th-9th grade. This pro- gram will foster a strong Catholic identity for 7th-9th graders and provide a Christ-centered community to support their growth in faith and fellowship to foster their relationship with Jesus. This two-year program enables our youth to best understand the sacrament of Confirmation. It will serve as foundation years for Confirmation preparation. After com- pletion, teens will transition to STA TEEN Ministry.

¿Todavía no tienen fe?’” (Marcos 4:35-40).

GOSPEL MEDITATION

June 20, 2021

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we look at our lives and world events, do we ever find ourselves wondering if God is sleeping? After all, maybe God’s patient, uncon- ditional love has run its course and He is finally fed up with humani- ty’s reluctance to accept the truth about who we are. God really can’t be that patient! All throughout human history, many have prayed to God for intervention or for particular needs. Because their prayers were not answered in the way they wanted or anticipated, they felt that God may have abandoned them. Were they right? It seems that we are continuing, at a rapid rate, down a path of destruction. Do you not care, God, that we may be perishing? When the boats of our lives are rocking and the seas tumultuous, we want to know that we have God’s attention. Even more so, we want God’s intervention.

Maybe the storms and the waves are necessary. If we listen, they can teach us valuable lessons. Without them, we would never learn that we have the strength to endure, understand the use- lessness of fear and worry, or develop the ability to really trust. If God immediately rushed in and simply calmed things down before they got difficult, what good would that really be? We would miss opportunities to learn how to drink more deeply of life, treasure its complexity, irony, and beauty and fully engage ourselves in surren- dering to the love of our Creator. It is easy to walk on the surface of life without immersing ourselves in its messiness. Life has to burn its way through us in order to bring us to a place of secure trust. It’s unfortunate that some prefer a shallower journey.

That’s the balancing act that comes with faith. It is not God’s job to prevent us from encountering the torrential rains and winds of life.

Many believe that if faith is done the right way, that God will pro- vide for smooth sailing. That’s not how it works. God permits us to ride out the difficult stuff knowing that the storm will eventually be calmed. Do we not have faith that God will do this? True faith trusts in the steadfastness of God’s love when the seas are calm and when they are choppy. God’s unconditional loving presence shines through all of it and endures forever. Knowing this allows us to put our boats out into unchartered waters without hesitation. Knowing that we prefer the comfort and safety of what we know to be still waters, how do we feel when Jesus says, “Let us cross to the other side”?

M y mother was big on thank-yous.

Most of her gratitude came in the form of baked goods—scrumptious edibles such as Italian wedding cookies or Polish chruscikis.

She offered these mouthwatering treats to people who constantly showed God’s kindness to us: the family doctor who never took a penny after our father died or the neighbors who plowed our driveway after the massive snowfalls. She recognized God’s goodness in the hearts of others and was eternally grateful. Focusing on the blessings of God rather than the pain of life often changed those potentially sadder moments into times of thanksgiving.

Like my mother, the Church continually reminds us through the liturgy to say thank you. The word Eucharist is derived from the Greek εὐχαριστία, which is translated as

“thankfulness” and “gratitude.”

At the heart of the liturgy is the thanksgiving offered in the Eucharistic Prayer. That prayer begins with a dialogue that starts when the priest says, “The Lord be with you,” and the people respond, “And with your Spirit.”

This dialogue begins what is called the Preface, the prelude to the Eucharistic Prayer. The word preface comes from the Latin noun made from the verb fari, meaning “to speak,” and the prefix prae-, meaning

“before.” The Preface is a prayer of utmost importance.

Nearly one hundred Prefaces are in The Roman Missal, with each connected to a particular liturgical season, solemnity, or feast. Each Preface begins with a reiteration of the last part of the Preface dialogue:

“It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks.”

Each line of the Preface draws on what God has done for his people, as Preface V of the Sundays in Ordinary Time, shows:

For you have laid the foundations of the world and have arranged the changing of times and seasons;

You formed man in your own image and set humanity over the whole world in all its wonder, to rule in your name over all you have made and forever praise you in your mighty works, through Christ our Lord.

After naming reasons to give thanks, the presider invites the assembly to join with the angels—

indeed the whole company of heaven—in a song of praise and thanksgiving as they sing the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy).

If we are truly attentive to the reminders of God’s goodness offered in the Preface and in other parts of the Mass, we will have no choice but to be so filled with thankfulness that, like my mother, we will have to pour out our gratefulness onto others.

The Preface

The Eucharistic Prayer begins with the words of gratitude in the Preface that tell of the deeds God has done for his people.
