THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE
As children we sang the lively song
This Little Light of Mine. The words, of
course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we
prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke.
(This Little Light of Mine).

In addition to Crisis Care and
Follow-Up Care, Stephen Ministers provide
their care receivers with Chronic Care. This is care for a long-term problem. Chronic illness or chronic suffering of any kind can be like a crisis that never ends. Chronic sufferers have to learn to live with problems that can detract significantly from their quality of life. Chronic sufferers experience unique problems. Research has indicated that suffering a chronic, incurable condition can be similar to being treated to chemical dependency. A stigma can be attached to being chronically ill. People can feel that the sufferer may have somehow brought this on his/ her self. Health care providers often provide inadequate care in chronic cases, because more attention is given to acute, short-term cases wherein the patient is ill, recovers more quickly, and resumes his/her normal life making it easier for all concerned. Chronic sufferers are usually long-term care receivers sometimes over many years. In addition to an illness or handicap they often suffer isolation and loneliness since they are confined to their home or a long-term care facility. Former friends may stop visiting because they find the situation difficult to deal with. The chronic sufferer then feels rejected, hurt, angry, and deeply sad or a revolt. Persons in need of
Chronic Care include those who are: Disabled,
Aged, In nursing homes, Homebound, Experiencing chronic pain such as arthritis, Living with
degenerative diseases. For more information, please contact CC at 909-553-5106.

Questions of the Week
Question for Children: What can you do to bring the
light of Jesus into the lives of your family, friends, and people you meet?
Question for Youth: How do you feel when Jesus says
that YOU are the salt of the earth and that YOU are called to be the light for others?
Question for Adults: What specific efforts do you take to
maintain your light? Do you let your light dim? Why?
"Among important issues involving the dignity of human life ... abortion necessarily plays a central role.... its
victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless .... It is imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice. This focus and the Church's commitment to a consistent ethic of life complement one another' (US Bishops' Pastoral Plan for Pro-life Activities, 2001).
Reflection: Consistency does not mean all issues are
of equal weight; it means all people are of equal value.
Prayer: Lord, give us the wisdom to meet the greatest
needs with the greatest sense of urgency. Amen.
