First Fridays and Holy Days - As announced in the Bulletin INFANT BAPTISMS

For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to

the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected

to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes.

CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION

For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES

Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in

advance to make the proper arrangements for the Sacrament

of Matrimony.

A priest is available for Confessions on Saturday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. You can also make an individual appoint-ment.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners,

In last week’s gospel we heard about Jesus’ commissioning and sending the Twelve Apos-tles out on mission to fight against evil, call people to repentance and bring God’s healing to those in need. Today we hear Jesus’ words of welcome to the Twelve when they return, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted pla-ce and rest a while.” The word “rest” is in the mind of many people especially in the summer months. Many of us take a summer vacation. Rest is important. Jesus calls his apostles to rest.

When we rest we are able to take time to reflect, be renewed and recollect ourselves. We have time to become more sensitive about our state in life. We take time to smell the flo-wers. We find the rhythm of work and rest in the book of Genesis where it is said that God rested on the seventh day from all the work of creation. God saw that what he did was good. It is following the wisdom of this biblical teaching that the church requires us to obser-ve each Sunday as the Day of the Lord by res-ting from our work in the week and worshiping together as a community of faith. We are not people whose lives are totally absorbed by work. We are called to live lives that are cen-tered on God.

It is my prayer that each of us may enter into the rest that God provides for us in him. May we grow in our ability to receive this rest spiri-tually as well as physically each Sunday du-ring the year in the Eucharist. I pray that ever-yone enjoys rest from their vacations during the summer or whenever you plan to take it. May all be safe and kindly do not forget your weekly collections for the church. Enjoy.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO

Queridos Feligreses:

En el evangelio de la semana pasada escu-chamos acerca la comisión de Jesús y el envío de los Doce Apóstoles en misión para luchar contra el mal, llamado a las personas al arre-pentimiento y llevar la sanidad de Dios a los necesitados. Hoy escuchamos las palabras de bienvenida de Jesús a los Doce cuando re-gresan, "vengan ustedes solos a un lugar soli-tario y descansen un rato". La palabra

"descansar" está en la mente de muchas per-sonas especialmente en los meses de verano. Muchos de nosotros tomamos vacaciones de verano. El descanso es importante. Jesús llama a sus apóstoles a descansar.

Cuando descansamos, podemos tomarnos un tiempo para reflexionar, renovarnos y reconec-tarnosa a nosotros mismos. Tenemos tiempo para ser más sensibles en nuestras vidas. Tomamos tiempo para oler las flores. Encontra-mos el ritmo de trabajo y descansaEncontra-mos en el libro de Génesis donde se dice que Dios descansó en el séptimo día de trabajo de la creación. Dios vio que lo que él hizo era bueno. Entonces siguiendo la sabiduría de esta ense-ñanza bíblica la iglesia nos exige que ob-servemos cada domingo como el Día del Señor descansando de nuestro trabajo en la semana y adorando juntos como una comunidad de fe. No somos personas cuyas vidas están totalmente absorbidas por el trabajo. Somos llamados a vivir vidas centradas en Dios.

Mi oración es que cada uno de nosotros entrem-os en el descanso que Dientrem-os nentrem-os provee. Que podamos crecer en nuestra capacidad de recibir este descanso tanto espiritual como físicamente cada domingo durante el año en la Eucaristía. Rezo por todos que disfruten del descanso de sus vacaciones durante el verano o cuando planeen tomarlo. Por favor cuidense y amable-mente no olvide sus donaciones semanales pa-ra la iglesia. Disfruten.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the

colonies had always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial

laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to

be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in

France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten

Car-mel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister,

she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1790. Within twenty years the community had grown to

twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school.

The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The

Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return

thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Today, our original

American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Desde el Concilio Vaticano II la Iglesia, como Pueblo de Dios, ha tomado la imagen de una peregrinación para definir su presencia en este mundo. Para los hispanos la peregrinación más antigua es la de Santiago de Compostela en España cuya fiesta celebramos esta semana.

Según la tradición, Santiago Apóstol evangelizó España y después de su muerte su cadáver fue llevado a Galicia por acontecimientos milagrosos. En el siglo VII señales de estrellas

lleva-ron al descubrimiento del lugar de su entierro y se construyó un santuario con el nombre de Campo de Estrellas. Eventualmente, a finales del primer milenio cristiano, empezaron las

fa-mosas peregrinaciones a Santiago.

Después de muchos siglos la mejor manera de llegar a Santiago todavía es a pie. Recorrer el camino de Santiago es caminar sobre las huellas de innumerables peregrinos que durante más

de mil años han ido trazando el sendero. Peregrinar es caminar despacio por la vida de fe, aguantando lo que el camino ofrezca con la certeza final de gozar la contemplación de Dios.
