Today, Mary and Joseph faithful to the law of Moses offered their first born son to God. What does that mean for us? It means that every day we have to offer up our lives to God. How can we do that? We need to do three things: (1) Encounter, (2) Death, and (3) Resurrec on. Simeon and Anna were dedicated to prayer and making sacrifices to God. That empowered them with grace so they could see, recognize, and encounter Jesus as the Messiah.
Now we are called to come into the Church and encoun-ter Jesus Christ and become empowered by the grace of the Holy Spirit. We are called to contemplate the face of God in Jesus Christ in a special way by medita ng on Sa-cred Scripture. We are called to become empowered by receiving the sacraments especially the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
But the real shocker came when Simeon turned to the Virgin Mary and said: “and you yourself a sword will pierce.” It must have felt like a second annuncia on--an annuncia on full of dread. She would experience and feel the pain of seeing her son opposed and rejected throughout his ministry—even though he was trying to save his own people. She would experience and feel the pain of being abandoned by God. She would experience and feel the unspeakable pain of a mother’s grief as she stood beneath the cross on Calvary, watching the inno-cent son she once cradled, die the brutal death of a com-mon criminal. And for what? For our salva on.
Now we are called to die a martyr’s death to ourselves, by carrying the cross. We are called to die to our self-interest in order to carry the cross of living for others. We are called to carry the cross of our sufferings by offer-ing them up to God for the conversion of sinners. We are called to help our brothers and sisters carry the cross of their sufferings. And through it all, even when we feel abandoned by God, we are called to persevere in our faith, hope, and love for God and Jesus Christ. The good news is we do not have to do it alone. Jesus Christ is here to help us. Just like Simon the Cyrene helped Jesus carry the cross; Jesus will help us carry the cross. Jesus said: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ... For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt. 11:28-30).
In the first reading, the prophet Malachi foretold that from east to west a pure and acceptable sacrifice would be offered up to God (Mal. 1:11; 3:3-4). That would be fulfilled the way Simeon foretold it: “My eyes have seen your salva on…a light for revela on to the Gen les, and glory for your people Israel” (Lk. 2:32). That means the pure and acceptable sacrifice offered up to God was Je-sus Christ on the Cross on Calvary. And it was so accepta-ble to God that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead--so that one day we too will be resurrected from the dead.
Now we are called to become the resurrec on by making a holy and living sacrifice of our lives to God. How? By receiving the love God gives us and passing it on to oth-ers. By proclaiming the good news in the way we live our lives—in everything we say and do. By reaching out to-gether with Jesus Christ, to help the poor, the suffering, the sick, the addicts, the incarcerated, the lonely, and anyone else who is not wanted by the world. Now it is our turn to become a light that shines with the love of Jesus Christ in everything we say and do.
primogéni-to a Dios.
Somos llamados a morir a
