TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given “extraterritorial rights,” meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome.

Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty one- self. There’s still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don’t have a personal castle in the hills!

HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICE

In the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serv- ing the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other posses- sions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many

“strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God.

Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34).

. . . WE WILL SERVE THE LORD To make the choice of whom to serve, whom to believe in and trust, it is necessary sometimes to come to a moment of crisis. The concept of the Eucharist was so difficult that many who followed Jesus could not accept it. But those who had an intimate relationship with Jesus, not one based on signs and miracles but based on love, knew that their lives had been forever changed. There was no going back; there were no other “gods” to serve. There was the One, and everything depended on that fact. It is love that makes the choices clearer.

We don’t completely understand this mys- tery, or many mysteries of life. But in the intimate relationship of faith, we believe and trust in the One who is faithful. We have been given a great gift, and we cannot possibly understand it fully.

But we know we have been loved, that we love in return, and “we have come to believe.” It makes all the difference.

• Unbaptized adults who are seeking a relationship with God, and who would like to learn how the Catholic Faith can help them in this quest.

• Baptized Christians from other faith traditions who would like to learn more about what Catholics believe, and why and possibly join the Catholic Church.

• Baptized Catholics who have not received their First Holy Communion and/or never been Confirmed.

• The Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for Children 7 years old and up, unbaptized are welcome!

2018 Priests’ Convocation Dinner

St. Francis of Assisi Church

Dear Friends,

Like last year, our parish has the honor of hosting the 2018 Priests’ Anniversary Mass and Dinner on September 12, during the Priest Convocation Week. The Con- vocation is a time for the priests to gather as brothers, to pray together, reflect on their priestly lives, support one another, and through various sessions continue to renew their calling as Priests of God and His Church. We have the distinctive hon- or of hosting Bishop Barnes and 197 priests. Many priests will celebrate their 25

and up, Anniversaries of their Ordination.

The Jubilee Mass will be at 5:30 p.m. in our church. All are invited. The private dinner for the priests will be held in our parish hall. As we did last year we have an opportunity for our parish community to show their love for our priests who serve us.

At times, you have asked priests to join you for dinner in your homes or elsewhere.

Now, each of you has an opportunity to participate at their Jubilee Mass and help to support the Jubilee Dinner. If you are able to support this blessed occasion through your prayers and a commemorative gift to help provide the dinner, please pick up an envelope and prayer card available at all church door exits or the par- ish office. You may drop off your envelope during the offertory collection or at the parish office.

Thank you for participating in this opportunity to show your gratitude for these men who have heard the Call to Christ’s Priesthood. May we always pray for our priests and support them in their God-given Ministry.

CASAS AL SERVICIO DE DIOS

Antiguamente, la palabra “familia” tenía un significado muy amplio. Cuando Josué habla hoy de que su familia servirá al Señor, no se refería solo a las personas que vivían dentro de sus paredes ni a sus parientes de sangre o políticos; se refería a los esclavos o cria- dos y sus familias y cualquier persona que estuviera en deuda con él por algún motivo. In- cluso su ganado y demás bienes debían consagrarse a servir a Dios. En nuestro mundo, valo- ramos mucho la libertad de los individuos para elegir de qué manera vivir y no se nos ocu- rriría poner a nuestras mascotas al servicio de Dios. Pero, al discernir nuestra vocación como discípulos bautizados en Cristo, llegamos a comprender la diversidad de las “familias”

de nuestra vida: la manera en que obramos con nuestros cónyuges, hijos, compañeros de habitación o con quien sea que vivamos; nuestro comportamiento con los vecinos o en pú- blico ya que cada día nos topamos con muchos “extraños” en los negocios o en la calle, quienes de repente se convierten en “el vecino”. ¿De qué manera podemos usar nuestro tiempo, recursos o dones con fines desinteresados en vez de con el fin de obtener algún be- neficio personal? Sin importar en qué clase de vida demos testimonio de la Buena Nueva, todos tenemos una “familia” que debe consagrarse al servicio del Señor, nuestro Dios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán nació el día de san Narciso (29 de octubre, 1832), hija de campesinos ecuatorianos. Vivió su vida como costurera y doméstica. Falleció en Perú en 1869. Su fe se distinguió por su amor a la presencia de Jesús Sacramentado en la Eucaristía, sus prácticas de penitencia y sus obras de caridad.

Cuando aún era joven, conoció la vida de la recientemente beatificada y ahora santa, Marianita de Jesús, “la Azucena de Quito” (1618‑1645). La vida de esta santa mujer lati- na la inspiró a vivir como mejor cristiana, buscando ser guiada espiritualmente por una serie de directores espirituales.

En esta laica beata, encontramos dos puntos de reflexión para nosotros los latinos.

El primero es la necesidad de conocer nuestros santos latinos no sólo para recurrir a ellos sino para imitar su santidad. Lo segundo es la necesidad de buenos directores espirituales, ya sean sacerdotes, religiosos, religiosas, laicos o laicas. La dirección espiritual es una prác- tica antigua en nuestra Iglesia y muchos hombres y mujeres han sido directores espirituales para guiar a personas como Narcisa, ayudándoles en el camino a la santidad.

2018 Priests’ Convocation Dinner

St. Francis of Assisi Church

Queridos amigos,

Igual que el año pasado, nuestra parroquia ha sido seleccionada para ser anfitriona de la Misa y Cena del Aniversario de los Sacerdotes del 2018 el día 12 de septiembre, la cual será durante la Semana de la Convocatoria de Sacerdotes. La Convocatoria es un tiempo para que los sacerdotes se reúnan como hermanos, oren juntos, reflexionen sobre sus vidas sacerdotales, se apoyen unos a otros, y para que a través de diversas sesiones continúen renovando su llamado como Sacerdotes de Dios y de la Iglesia.

Tenemos el gran honor de recibir al Reverendísimo Obispo Gerald R. Barnes y a 197 sacerdotes. Mu- chos sacerdotes celebran sus 25º, 40º, 50º Aniversarios de su Ordenación.

La Misa del Jubileo será a las 5:30 pm en nuestra hermosa parroquia. Todos están invitados. La cena privada para los sacerdotes se llevará a cabo en el salón parroquial. Esta es una gran oportunidad para nuestra comunidad de mostrar nuestro amor por nuestros sacerdotes y nuestro agradecimiento por es- tos hombres que nos sirven.

En ocasiones invitamos a nuestros sacerdotes a nuestros hogares o a otros lugares para cenar; ahora, cada uno de nosotros tiene la oportunidad de participar en su Misa de Jubileo y de ayudar y apoyar la Cena del Jubileo. Si a usted le gustaría apoyar esta bendita ocasión a través de sus oraciones y con un regalo conmemorativo, por favor tome un sobre y una tarjeta de oración que estarán disponibles en todas las salidas de la parroquia o en la oficina parroquial. Puede depositar su sobre durante la colec- ción del ofertorio o en la oficina parroquial.

2018 Priests’ Convocation Dinner

St. Francis of Assisi Church

Quý ông bà anh chị em thân mến,

Như năm ngoái Giáo xứ chúng ta sẽ tổ chức Lễ Kỷ Niệm Thụ Phong Linh Mục và Tiệc mừng trong tuần Tĩnh Tâm của các Linh Mục, Ngày 12 Tháng 9. Tuần Tĩnh Tâm các Linh Mục là lúc các anh em linh mục xum họp, cùng nhau cầu nguyện, suy ngẫm về đời sống mục vụ của mình, hỗ trợ anh em, và qua các buổi thuyết trình, tiếp tục canh tân đời sống ơn gọi Linh Mục của Chúa và Giáo Hội. Giáo xứ chúng ta lại được vinh dự tiếp đón Giám mục Barnes và 197 quý linh mục. Nhiều linh mục sẽ mừng 25 năm, 40 năm, 50 năm kỷ niệm Thụ Phong Linh Mục.

Thân mời quý ông bà anh chị em tham dự Lễ Ngân Khánh vào lúc 5:30 chiều tại nhà thờ của chúng ta. Sau thánh lễ sẽ có tiệc mừng dành riêng cho quý cha tại hội trường.

Cũng như năm ngoái, chúng ta hãy nhân cơ hội này tỏ lòng yêu mến và biết ơn phục vụ của các linh mục trong địa phận mình.

Đôi lúc, giáo dân cũng mời linh mục ăn tối tại gia đình hoặc ra mời ngoài ăn tối; giờ đây, mỗi người đều có cơ hội tham dự Lễ Ngân Khánh của các Ngài và đóng góp cho tiệc mừng. Nếu quý ông bà anh chị em có thể ủng hộ tài chánh cho ngày kỷ niệm này, xin vui lòng dùng những phong bì và thẻ cầu nguyện để nơi các lối ra vào nhà thờ hoặc lấy tại văn phòng nhà xứ. Quý vị có thể đưa lại và bỏ vào giỏ quyên tiền trong lễ Chúa Nhật hoặc đưa lại văn phòng.

Xin chân thành tri ân ơn quý vị đã nhân cơ hội này bày tỏ lòng biết ơn với các linh mục đã đáp lời mời gọi của Chúa Kitô và theo Ngài. Xin quý ông bà anh chị em luôn cầu nguyện và nâng đỡ các linh mục trong các mục vụ của Chúa đã trao cho các ngài.

• Người tín hữu đã được rửa tội theo giáo phái khác, muốn tìm hiểu thêm về Đức tin Công giáo, và có thể gia nhập Công giáo.
