conversión, llega a Jerusalén y encuentra

resistencia.

The Will Of The Father Determines

When It Is Time To Prune Us

Few of us, even when we meditate on the

image of the vine and branches, stop to really think

about how God “prunes” us.

For some there is the danger of thinking

that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom,

in deed and truth as John says, perhaps raising a

family, being active in our parish, and so on.

But even those branches which are bearing

fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be pruned to produce

still more.

Today Saul, freshly “pruned” by his

conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets

resistance. Since he had been persecuting

Christians, this was only natural. But even after

he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets

further adversity, and his letters are fi lled with many

accounts of how his trials “pruned” him to produce

greater fruit for the kingdom.

Like him, as long as we remain in Christ

we will continue to bear fruit and, when the will of

the Father determines it is time to prune us, the

strength of the true vine must enable us to

endure it.

Mientras oramos por las vocaciones cada semana,

continuemos conociendo nuestros pastores.

P. Mario Torres,

Pastor Asociado

Meet Our Shepherds, Part 1

Conoce a Nuestros Pastores, Parte 1

As we pray for vocations each week, let’s continue

to get to know our shepherds.

Fr Mario Torres,

Associate Pastor

Ordained: 2010 in the Diocese of León, Nicaragua At OLS Since: 2018

His journey to answer the Holy Spirit: Sharing the most important facts of my vocation has made me remember wonderful moments of my life.

I can tell you that this adventure began 24 years ago, yes in 1996, more than half of my life. But I still want to clarify that as a child I never had the vocational restlessness, the idea of being a priest never crossed my mind. It was only in my last year of

high school that I began to see other options for my life than the ones I had already planned.

It was a high school teacher, who is now also a priest, who fi rst spoke to me about the possibility of religious life and it was the same teacher who invited me to my fi rst vocational meeting.

That fi rst serious meeting to consider a vocation to religious life was in mid-1996 when I was invited to participate in a week-long vocational meeting with the Franciscan Friars Minor. That was undoubtedly the origin of my vocation. But that meeting was intended to prepare those who were about to begin a formal process with the Franciscan Order and I was not yet ready. So I went back to school activities, especially because I was nearing the end of high school and I wanted to focus on college, which was getting closer and closer, but I participated in the school’s youth ministry group and that helped me to keep my spiritual life alive and also to keep the little seed of vocation. The school I attended to fi nish high school off ered me the opportunity to get closer to God. My family was not that close to the Church, we went to special occasion masses, but not formal commitments. It was in the last years of high school that I discovered the wonderful treasure of my faith, which I continue to discover and understand. Vocations start with an invitation. Who are you iniviting to consider the priesthood?

Identifying risky behaviors online

As virtual learning continues, children are spending most of their days online. With their own jobs and responsibilities, parents likely cannot stand behind them and supervise their every move. So, it is more important than ever to assess your child’s online activities

periodically. Make sure you know which sites they are visiting, and who they are talking to on social media sites. Discuss risky behaviors with your children, like posting personal information (full name, age, location, school information, and more) using inappropriate language, or accessing sites with questionable content. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS article “Risky Online Behaviors and Young People” from https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

The Catholic Church dedicates the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Francis will open the month of prayer on May 1, asking for Mary’s intercession.
