18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." This isn't a message that gets much advertising. On the contrary, just about every advertised message we hear comes from someone who wants to make money by selling us possessions. The message we hear loud and clear on tele-vision or Internet ads or on highway billboards or the back cover of magazines is that we need this product or that service in order to be happy. Professional marketers are in the business of creating a supposed need and then promising to fill it with their product. In today's culture, it's hard to remember that life isn't about possessions. But in this Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is more to life than having "so many good things stored up for many years." All of this stuff-be it clothes, devices, equipment, decorations, entertainment centers, or anything else-does no lasting good if and when "this night your life will be demanded of you." Unlike the fool who spends all of his time, energy, and money building larger barns, we should focus our resources on becoming "rich in what matters to God." This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. It means sharing our money with those in need instead of hoarding it out of selfish greed. The call is a challenging one, and countercultural too. But Jesus never said that the Christian way was the way of the world. As St. Paul instructs us in today's epistle, "Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly." Instead of falling for the marketers' messages, may we have the wisdom to store up our treasure in heaven.

¿Has pensado en ello?

Generations of Faith Campaign

Thank you so much for your financial commitment to the Generations of Faith Campaign. Your financial promise over the next 5 years is truly appreciated. Help us continue the work we need to do for Christ and His people by donating each month toward fulfilling your commitment. Donating each month will be a tremendous help to what we must accomplish in our parish and our Diocese, especially for educating our young people about the faith and our retired and sick priests. Thank you for your support, Rev. Kenneth J. Grande

Sharing the Gospel

.Farmer Brown gave bushels of green beans to the homeless shelter. When he died, God said, "I remember you. You gave me green beans when I was hungry. Come on in." Farmer Smith never shared any green beans with the hungry. When he died God said, "I do not know you. You never shared." God wanted Farmer Smith to learn to share so that God would know him at heaven's gate. When you put Jesus first in your life, you will have everything you need. Having a lot of stuff won't really make you or God happy. God doesn't want you to keep your blessings to yourself. God wants you to share what he has given you. Be "rich" in only the things that God cares about. The closer you grow with God, the happier you will be.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, help me to remember what is really important to You.

Something to Draw

Draw a picture of yourself giving one of your books away to someone who doesn't have any.
