FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
My good friends,As I mentioned last week in our bulletin, Bishop DiMarzio really wants us to extend our church to accommodate more faithful in the pews. I have been investigating this possibility since I arrived. Fathers Fulgencio and Jim also had looked into this. It’s a daunting task. If you’re interested, here’s just a little (and I do mean a LITTLE) of what we’ve been told.
If we knock out the windows next to the children’s crying room – extending the church into the garden where the statue of St. Francis currently ‘resides’, this would cost about $250,000 – very rough estimate of course. And if we did this, we would only wind up adding about 46 extra seats. (Sorry, my opinion is that this is a terrible waste of money for basically NOTHING).
Another opinion from the architect is to take the benches and pews that we now have and ‘tighten them up’. In other words, we would push them even closer together...giving us another hundred or so seats. (My opinion is that I really dislike this suggestion. When I kneel in the bench, I have trouble be-cause my legs are long. And I’m not a very small person. However, let’s be honest, a great many of our kids are bigger than we were at their age. We’re talking about sardines in a can. ( I would rather stand!)
The last suggestion, at this point, comes from the Bishop himself. According to his calculations, since we have a school building that brings in some substantial rent (we clear about $250 thousand each year) then we could take out a loan and slowly pay it off. The idea would then be to knock down the entire brick wall and extend the church towards 20street. Or, if I’m not understanding perfectly, we would knock down the wall and extend the church out towards New Haven Avenue. Fa-ther Fulgencio and I estimate this at between three and five million dollars. We would be paying off that debt for the rest of my time here at St. Mary.
I’ll add more next week. However, if we did this – and took on the 5 million dollar debt, then all the work that we need to do would be impossible. I see so much work that we need to do on St. Gertrude Church and gym, as well as new microphones and some nice renovations at St. Mary. The new phone sys-tem which we are looking at is costly. I’ll publish the wiring part of that contract next week. All these little improvements would be greatly curtailed if we had a debt of that amount.
So, amigos, thanks for sharing in these ‘musings’. I’ll cer-tainly ask for your opinions with a census, as well as conferring with the parish council and finance committee. But I leave these thoughts with you that you might begin to discuss what the ‘sensus fidelium’ would suggest which direction the parish take.
May our Risen Lord guide us, as He guided the early church so beautifully,
Father Frank

Mother’s Day Prayer
Loving God,
we thank you for the love of the
mothers you have given us,
whose love is so precious that it can never be
meas-ured, whose patience seems to have no end.
May we see your loving hand behind them and
guid-ing them.
We pray for those mothers who fear they will run out
of love or time, or patience.
We ask you to bless them with your own special love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord.
Amen.
My good friends,
Once again, let me thank everyone who
made the Bishop’s visit to our parish such a
nice event. I think it might have been even
nicer if Bishop DiMarzio could have said the
last mass and made it bi-lingual. But we
had to work with his schedule. But clearly,
all the different groups during the mass and
at meeting in McKenna Hall made us ‘look
good’!
And as life goes, so does our church.
We have our highs and our lows. The day
after the Bishop’s visit – such a joyful day
for St. Mary-St. Gertrude – our Deacon Eddie and his wife
Carmen found their son in their home. Only God knows
the days and years allotted to us here on earth. Here is a
picture that I loved of Eddie when he was just a kid. As I
mentioned at this funeral mass, Eddie was always a
play-ful kid – and it seems that he never changed! Eddie was
always fun loving, generous, and in love with his family
(especially his children). So we pray that Eddie be
forev-er young in heaven. And may God bless our Deacon
Ed-die, Carmen and the entire Montero family in this difficult
hour.
Peace,
Father Frank
nuestra iglesia. Tenemos nuestros puntos
altos y nuestros puntos bajos.
cuya paciencia parece no tener fin.
